I knew he was going to get some griping because Bobby did not like outdoor work. He much preferred to cook or read a good book.
“Okay Dad.” His tone said that he wasn't looking forward to it. “ I wish there was a pair of gloves that these briars couldn't prick me through. They hurt!” Bobby grumbled as he dutifully started slashing at the briers.
“OW, Dad a hornet got me!” Bobby started dancing and swatting at hornets as he ran towards the house.
“Let me see.” Al called as he chased him. “Where did he get you, does it hurt? Stop so I can help.”
Bobby stopped and turned around, his eyes wet with tears. His upper lip was rapidly swelling out and above his right eyelid was the size of a banty hen egg.
“I think he stung at least twice.” He sobbed. Al took him in his arms, lightly touching the bumps to comfort him while I got ice and a camera to record the face for his kids to see. That's a parents job, you know.

“Mom, you just rest until we get back from Church.” Bobby said while patting my hand. “I know you want to go but you are too sick.”
“I know you will feel better soon.” Aaron said while tucking me in. “We will tell you all about the services when we get home and we will tell Pastor to have prayer for you.”
“ Thank You, boys” My head was throbbing so hard I could barely hear them or myself talk. “I will accept the prayers. Al, stop and get dinner on the way home, please. I don't think I will feel like cooking.”
“Okay, Will do. What shall we get boys?” Al knew that if he gave the boys choice, the fight would be on over pizza or Chinese takeout; he always let them battle awhile though.
My wonderful family argued their way out the door as I drifted off to dreamland.
“Momma, He touched me!” I awoke with a start at Bobby's voice. “He touched me!”
“Who touched you?” I asked groggily.
“Jesus, Jesus touched me! You know how pastor says we will go to hell without Jesus? I finally realized I needed to give my heart and soul to God. So I went forward when preacher gave the invitation to be saved. I said the prayer, and I felt Jesus touch me. It felt so good momma, so warm and nice. I want to keep this feeling forever.”
Big tears of joy were running down his cheeks and mine. “Hallelujah! Thank you, Jesus for saving my boy.” We held one another and worshiped until Al called that dinner was ready.
I never let go of his arm until we got to the table. “Are you going to fix supper for us tonight.” I asked him while we were eating dinner. “You can fix what ever you want.”
“Oh Boy, I can fix fried baloney sandwiches and my special chocolate cake. Can I really?”
“Yes, really.” There was pure joy for us all that night.
Two wonderful years later, Bobby began having lots of pain in his right hip. Nothing seemed to relieve the pain for long. X-Rays didn't show a problem. Doctors were stymied. Chiropractic adjustments provided some relief, So when it was time to return to Chef's School, I made arrangements for him to see a chiropractor there.
At school he had to work 8 hours and go to school 6 hours. In 2 months he lost 15 pounds. Bobby was in lots of pain. An x-ray showed a large growth in his abdomen. He was flown immediately to the hospital in Tacoma. We met them there. A biopsy showed Ewings Sarcoma. It had a cure rate of only 5%. His dream of becoming a chef in the Merchant Marines to make enough money to send me on a cruise on the Loveboat was never to be.
He went to Heaven after donating his body to cancer research so they could learn how to cure the cancer. He was a child of God until his last breath. The cure rate for Ewings Sarcoma has went up to 55-60% since then. My child helped that happen.
