“I just can’t seem to breathe life into this character. I don’t know what I’m going to do, I’m already behind schedule."
“Ok, I just need to take a few deep breaths, relax, and close my eyes for a minute and try to visualize her,” she told herself with exasperation.
“So what do I know about Ms. Darling? Let’s see, she is 40 years old, 5’7”, full figured, long brown hair, big brown eyes, with a self-centered, Southern Belle personality,” Christie pictured as she sat perched in front of her computer waiting for inspiration to set in.
“AHHHHH, I have such writer’s block!”
“Ok Ms. Darling, you and I are going shopping. I need a break,” she said leaping up to leave the apartment.
“Le Chic Boutique is just what I need to unwind for a little diversion,” she thought.
“Hmmm, let’s see,” as she browsed through the sales rack of glitzy evening dresses held hostage in zippered plastic bags.
“What would Ms. Darling wear to a cocktail party to attract Mr.Givens? Something sexy, but not too sexy, to capture the heart of the prominent pastor,” she surmised as she fingered through the dresses, pausing briefly to eye up each one, before moving on to the next.
After many unsuccessful runs to the dressing room with gowns of all sizes, shapes, and colors, the perfect dress revealed itself.
The hot pink gown hugged her body in all the right places and illuminated her cheeks with a pink hue that transformed Christie into Ms. Darling.
“It’s perfect and 50% off! I have to buy it,” she convinced herself.
“I must have shoes to match and these pink ones are the perfect shade,” Christy decided as she held the shoes up to her dress.
“My, my Mr. Givens, wait until you see me strut my stuff,” she unintentionally spoke out loud with southern attitude.
The sales girl looked up startled and commented, “Ms. Christy, are you alright?”
“Bless your heart, precious, I’m fine.”
“Would you be a dear and cut these nasty tags off for me, I am wearing this home,” Christie stated as she twisted her head with her nose in the air trying to capture a peek at the back of her dress.
“That looks beautiful on you,” Stacey proclaimed as she handed Christie back her credit card.
“I declare! I do look stunning! Mr. Givens, look out, here I come!”
“Y’all have a nice day now,” Christie said as she sashayed out the door.
The salesgirl cocked her head to the right and stared at the doorway in utter confusion.
Christy, unable to maintain her character any longer, began to giggle, turned and poked her head back in the doorway.
“Don’t mind me; I am just pretending to be a character in my new book. I’m trying to unblock my writer’s block you know.”
Fresh ideas and scenes began fast forwarding in her head as she drove home. She visualized Ms. Darling stealing the heart of Mr. Givens at the party, followed by months of courting and ending with marriage bells. Christie’s words flowed with ease as she typed nonstop for hours in her hot pink attire.
As she was proofreading her last chapter, the doorbell rang.
“Who on earth could that be? Tom is working late,” she thought as she hurried to the door yelling, “Who’s there?”
“It’s Mr. Givens here to court Ms. Darling,” announced the deep unrecognizable voice on the other side of the door.
“What?” Christie squinted her eyes to peep through the hole to view Mr. Givens.
There stood her husband grinning with roses in one hand and a box of chocolates in a heart shaped box in the other.
She opened the door and Tom announced, “Is Ms. Darling ready?”
“Oh yes Mr. Givens, Ms. Darling is always ready to go anywhere with you,” she exclaimed.
“How did you know?” Christie asked as she arranged the roses in a vase.
“You forget honey, we live in a small town,” he explained as he escorted her to the car.
“Tom, I love you for being so supportive,” she said as she kissed him.
“I love you too, Ms. Darling.”
