“I have some hot biscuits and honey for you,” she replied.
“Well that’s it Mom, I have enough now. When Mr. Peterson pays me this afternoon, I will have enough money to buy my bike,” Danny announced.
“Wow, you saved $150 dollars, I am so proud of you. You are really growing up,” she said with happy mother-tears swelling in her eyes.
Danny could hardly contain the excitement building up inside of him all day at school. The clock seemed to move in slow motion, and he could barely sit still in his seat. Finally, the dismissal alarm went off, and Danny was the first one out of the door. As he made his way down the school steps he heard the familiar voice of Thomas, the class bully: “Where are you going paperboy?”
“I am going to McCaskel’s to get my new bike,” Danny said sheepishly.
“Hmph, new bike huh? I guess you think you’re hot stuff now? Well don’t get any smart ideas cause I am still in charge around here, got it?” Thomas said as he pushed Danny in the chest.
“I hear you Thomas, I just want to go get my bike,” Danny said as he maneuvered passed Thomas and headed toward the store.
This day had finally arrived! Danny pushed open the store door and heard the bell on the door chirp its hello. He flew to the bike section and proudly backed his bike off the rack and proceeded to the checkout counter.
Stacey, a girl from his class, was already at the counter negotiating a deal with Mr. McCaskel for a doll.
“No you do not have enough money for that doll. It costs $50.00 and you just have $20.00, my dear,” Mr. McCaskel was explaining to Stacey.
“But Mr. McCaskel, this is for my sister and it’s her birthday tomorrow,” Stacey pleaded.
“I understand but you just don’t have enough money, sweetie,” he said gently. “Where are your Mom and Dad?” he added.
“They’re at the hospital with my sister. You see, she is having an operation to fix her heart,” Stacey replied.
Danny, overhearing the negotiations, felt a nudge on his shoulder. He looked back and no one was behind him.
He thought for a minute and whispered, “Is that You God? I know what You want me to do, but are You sure?”
After a moment of conversing quietly with God, Danny spoke up.
“Stacey, look here, I have the money for the doll,” he said.
“But Danny that’s for your bike, you can’t do that.”
No, it’s ok, I want you to have it,” Danny insisted.
Stacey gave Danny a bear hug and a smile from ear to ear. “Oh thank you so much!! My sister is going to love this doll! I want it to be the first thing she sees when she wakes up from her operation,” Stacey stated proudly.
Danny slowly pushed the bike back to the bike rack, gave the seat a loving pat, and shuffled out of the store.
“It’s ok, only $30 more dollars to go and I can come back and get it,” Danny said, trying to convince himself that he did the right thing.
Danny walked back home at a snail’s pace, with his hands in his pockets, and kicking every rock he saw.
“Hey paperboy, where’s that new bike?” Tommy sneered.
“Leave me alone, Tommy,” Danny replied dejectedly.
“Hmph, what a loser!” Tommy proclaimed hurling a rock at Danny’s back.
He turned the last corner and looked toward his house. He squinted and looked again. It couldn’t be. He ran the last half a block and there it was! His red bike was parked in front of the door!
His mother was posed in the doorway just smiling lovingly at him.
“Mr. McCaskel’s delivery boy just dropped it off. He told me what you did,” she said proudly.
“Dear, you were in such a hurry to buy your bike that you missed his sign in the front window.
Bike Sale 20% off!
“You had enough money for your bike even after you helped Stacey buy the doll,” she said happily.
Danny thought for a minute and looked up at the sky and said, “Thank You God, I get it now!!”
