The alarm clock went off at 6am like every other morning, but today was different. Today it did not fill the room with the preset church bell tone but instead emitted a low muffled dying alarm beep. Luckily I still heard this beep and rushed to the shower, woke the kids up for school, unloaded the dishwasher, loaded the washing machine, folded a load of clothes, reloaded the dishwasher, fed the cats, and headed out the door by 7:10, in that order. The morning drive proceeded as usual with the typical teenager requests for money, mom’s taxi service after school, and special dinner requests.
At work there was more of the same: contracts to be written before the ever- approaching deadlines, client billing, employee requests to be addressed, policies to be revised, payroll, and a boss to please until 4:30.
After work the phone calls began with, “What’s for dinner, Mom?” Today I responded with, “Leftovers and I will be home a little later.”
Feeling the stress of the day, I realized that I had not stopped for even just a few minutes to spend time with God. So I proceeded to drive to my favorite spot to reflect, pray, and unwind. As I sat on my bench by the pond, I closed my eyes to focus on God’s handiwork all around me.
The wind began to rustle through the trees and I heard God’s voice,“Shhhhhhhh- be still my child and know that I am with you.”
The trees continued to sway in the breeze and God spoke again. He said, “My child, always remember to include Me at the dawn of each new day, and I will carry your daily burdens for you.”
As I sat there among the trees with my eyes swelling up with tears, I felt God’s inner peace fill my soul and the weight and stress of the day began to melt away.
