“It’s snowing!” yelled Sally at the top of her lungs. Climbing out of bed she walked over to the window captivated by the winter scene unfolding outside. Millions of puffy white snowflakes filled the air silently floating downward landing softly on the ground. Their yard was already covered by a thick white blanket. “Mom…can I go outside and play?”
Sally’s mother stood in her doorway arms akimbo, “Sally, why are you yelling?”
“Sorry, Mom it’s snowing outside, can I go outside to play?”
“Oh honey…”
“Please…”
“Breakfast and chores first, then we’ll make time for you to play outside. Don’t forget your Grandma will be here this afternoon. She’ll be spending the Christmas holidays with us.”
“Yippee!”
A few hours later, Sally stood back and admired her snowman. It was a lot of work but it was worth it. Her snow man had two chestnut brown eyes a carrot nose and big red lips borrowed from her Halloween clown costume. She had just finished wrapping a Christmas scarf around his neck. “Sally, time to come in…”
“Whew, just in time” Sally said to her snowman.
Minutes later Sally opened the back door stomped the snow off her boots and stepped inside the warm kitchen. “Hang your coat up and take your galoshes’ off and leave them there by the door Sally” said her mother.
“Okay Mom…”
“Honey, I made some hot chocolate for us.”
“Mmm…can I have two scoops of marshmallow cream?”
Sally walked over to the kitchen counter and climbed up onto a kitchen stool. She wanted to supervise her mother who was dipping a spoon into the marshmallow cream jar lifting out a big gooey white glop. “One…”
Suddenly a car horn began to honk outside. “Grandma’s here!” yelled Sally as she jumped down from her stool and run to greet her grandmother. When the front door opened Sally said “Hi, Grandma! I made a snowman, did you see him?”
Laughing her grandmother nodded, “Yes, you did a fabulous job Sally. Burrr….it’s cold outside. Where’s your mother honey?”
“Oh, she’s in the kitchen, we’re having hot chocolate, you want some?”
From the kitchen Sally’s mom called, “Hi Grandma, come join me and Sally for some hot chocolate.
“Mmm… this tastes especially good,” said Sally’s grandmother a few minutes later.
“Grandma… Sally said, will you tell me a story?”
“Sure, what kind of a story would you like to hear?”
Sally thought for a few minutes before responding, “How about a story from the olden days, when you were a little girl.”
“Okay, I have just the one. This is the Christmas holidays and I have a special story that is actually a true story and it’s about me when I was a little girl not much older than you.”
“Sally, I remember the day in this story like it was yesterday. My best friend and I were walking home from school. It was in the fall just after my birthday. I remember shivering from the cold even though the sun was shining and it was windy because the giant ponderosa pine trees swayed back and forth filling the air with the perfume of pine. It must have been dry because clouds of red dust billowed up around my white oxford shoes as I scuffed my feet along the red cinder dirt road that led home. I was feeling especially sad that day. My friend must have sensed my sadness because she asked me…
“What’s the matter Charlotte?”
“I had a horrible day.”
“Why?”
“Tommy said there was no Santa Claus.”
My friend stopped walking and stared at me. So, I repeated, “There’s no Santa Claus, did you know that?”
“Yes!”
“Sally, I remember saying… if there is no Santa Claus, what’s the point in having Christmas?”
My friend said, “You mean you don’t know… about Jesus Christ?” I will NEVER forget the look of surprise on her face.
I had to admit though I didn’t know who He was.
“Oh, Charlotte my friend said, Jesus Christ is the real reason why we have Christmas. He is God’s Son and He was born Christmas day. That’s why there is a Christmas.”
“Thanks to my friend I learned about Jesus Christ and what He did for me. I began attending Sunday school with my friend. I invited my parents to a Christmas play at our church and they came to know the Lord too.”
“Sally Christmas is a special time especially to our family.”
