I couldn’t help but notice the chill in the air as I abruptly arose to exit the restaurant. The chill was not so much from the weather or the temperature of the restaurant, but from the displeasure in the actions of the company I was keeping.
Born in the Bible belt, I was raised to abstain from all alcohol, with no exceptions. So, when the girls I was with began to order wine, I was flabbergasted and I was way too polite to just voice my opposition to their choice! This called for action!
In the first place, we were attending a Christian college. Had they forgotten? And, surely they had been raised as I was in an extremely conservative Christian home. Who did they think they were fooling? Don’t they know God can see this and He’s keeping score? He will surely “get ‘em for this (and I hope He does)!”
Since I had no drivers license and I had been chauffeured to the restaurant by one of the partakers, the only option I had, in my moment of disbelief, was to walk back to the campus alone. Boy I wasn’t thinking that one thru! It was 1:30 in the morning, in the pitch blackness of night, in the middle of downtown Nashville, and I was female. Nevertheless, I had taken my stand and I couldn’t back down from it now. In my youthful arrogance, I hoped I was setting an example for all of the other girls and secretly hoped they would be ashamed.
“With age comes wisdom”, or so I’ve heard. I think what “age” really does, is prove to you how stupid you are when you’re young! I have thought about that incident many times in the last twenty-five years and hope I have learned many lessons from it!
When we are young, it’s as if we have a black veil over our eyes! Life is not what it seems to be. It’s actually much simpler to understand but, more difficult to maintain the backbone to really live it.
In the years that have followed, I have learned that it is a greater example of Christ’s love to be tolerant of others and that the second greatest commandment really is that we love one another as we love ourselves.
We are all at different places on the path of our walk with the Lord and living it without saying it is the greatest form of example we can have. But most of all, I have learned that the way we judge others, is the way Christ will judge us when we stand before Him! God help us to love one another as He has loved us and thanks God, for lifting the black veil of youth from my eyes.

You took a big chance walking alone in downtown Nashville early in the morning, or any big city for that matter!
Well written story and excellent message. You selected two weighty truths: love one another as Christ loves us, and God judges us by how we judge others. Walk in peace with our Lord.
