With anxiety building, Crystal went into the brightly-colored kitchen and poured herself a glass of milk. When she got nervous, Crystal always searched out food, so she put some cookies on a plate and went back to the living room. She continued to look out the window, waiting for David.
Crystal and David had been married for almost six years. They had talked extensively before they were married about how many children they wanted and how they would rear them. They also wanted Crystal to be a stay-at-home mother and eventually home school the children. David and Crystal had all their plans mapped out with the precise time frame their children would be born, but eventually they came to the conclusion that their plans and God's plans did not coincide.
After almost six years of trying to have a baby, and going through test after test, Crystal and David had decided to turn to adoption. After a long adoption process, they had recently brought home their six-week old daughter, Nicole Rae. They had completed decorating one of the bedrooms as a nursery. Being a woman, Crystal wanted everything frilly and girly-looking. David had teased Crystal that he didn't know pink came in so many shades. But, he didn't care what color they put in the nursery. He was just thankful for this precious miracle from God.
Crystal went about busying herself fixing dinner as she continued to wait for David. In the meantime, the baby woke and needed feeding. This took away some of her anxiety because she was concentrating on their little daughter and for a few minutes, allowed herself to relax.
Just as Crystal finished giving the baby her bottle, she heard a car door. She went to the living room and looked out. It was David.
“Daddy's home, Nicole. Let's open the door for him, okay?”
As David approached the door, Crystal could see his big smile. He smiled a whole lot more lately since they had adopted Nicole. They both had felt such a void in their lives. They couldn't imagine life without her.
“Hi, my two favorite girls,” David said as he got to where they stood.
“We've been waiting for you, David. I have something I want to tell you. I didn't think you'd ever get home.”
“Let's go in the house where we can sit down,” David said.
As David sat on the sofa, he asked Crystal just what it was she wanted to share with him.
Crystal placed the baby in David's arms and sat at his feet on the floor.
“David, how would you feel about having two children?” Crystal asked.
“I think you know how I would feel. We've always talked about having four children if it was in God's plan, but I'd be happy with raising Nicole alone if we were never able to adopt another child.”
“What would you say about having another baby in about 7 or 8 months?”
“Did the agency call and tell you they have another baby available?”
“No, David, it's even better than that. Have you noticed how anxious I've been lately – a little irritable and not always feeling up to par? Well, okay, I'm just going to tell you. I went to the doctor today and she gave me the news that you and I will be giving birth to our second baby in the not too distant future. Isn't that wonderful, David?”
David was speechless. He had been waiting to hear those words for almost six years. He began laughing and crying at the same time. Laughing because of the irony of having Nicole and crying because he was so pleased to hear the news from his beautiful wife.
“Why now?” he asked.
“I asked that very same question of the doctor today. She said that happens sometimes. When the adopting couple know there is a baby coming soon, they learn to relax knowing they are going to be parents. She believes that's what happened to us.”
"God sure has a sense of humor, doesn't He?" David asked. Crystal agreed as the two of them kissed each other and then their baby.
