“How can she do this to me?” Annabelle thought to herself. “She knows how I feel about Eric. Sure he’s the new kid in town, and yes he has hair a little longer than her mother would like; oh, and don’t forget his awesome jeans with the holes running throughout, and his sleeveless shirt with that cool skull on the front.”
“I just don’t understand the narrow-mindedness of older people. They think they know everything and they don’t! They just don’t understand what it’s like to be young!” Annabelle extricated herself from the squishy leather and plodded out onto the front porch.
She lowered herself despondently onto the swing and gazed out into nothingness.
“That might have been my only chance with him mother, and if you messed it up I will never forgive you! As a matter-of-fact, I’m not going to forgive you for treating me like a child and embarrassing me to death in front of Eric and the other guests at the party.”
Every year her parents, Nancy and Bob, threw a big 4th of July party for the whole neighborhood. She was startled out of her musing when she felt someone sit beside her. Her heart skipped a beat when she looked over and noticed it was Eric.
“Whatcha’ doin’ out here all by yourself Annie? Don’t mind if I call ya’ Annie do ya?” He smiled as he waited for her response.
She had never had trouble talking to boys before, but Eric had the biggest blue eyes that rippled like pools of water, and the whitest, straightest teeth she had ever seen.
She made herself say something. “No, I don’t mind.” She smiled back. She loved how his hair was curly and black as midnight. He was beautiful! He was perfect!
Dusk had fallen and the first spray of light filled the sky in resplendent glory with a loud trail of pops, bangs, and whistles. There were oohs and aahs, giggles and screams, laughter and shouting.
Usually Annabelle was just as enthralled as any of the little kids, but this year another light held her gaze.
“We can sneak away for a quick ride down the road and no one will ever know. I’ll have ya’ back in a jiffy.” Eric tilted his head in a pleading manner as he raised his eyebrows.
Annabelle had never disobeyed her parents. Her father was a Minister at the First Baptist Church, and her mother was President of the Ladies Garden Club. She breathed deeply, and tried to say no, but “okay” came out instead.
Her eyes grew large in disbelief. She shook her head as he grabbed her hand and pulled her up from the swing.
He led her along toward his red camero parked out front. Her parent’s faces filled her view as they pointed and shook their heads no. She was tired of being told no. She slid into the passenger seat as Eric opened the door for her.
Annabelle held on to the un-forgiveness in her heart and tried to smile, tried to laugh, tried to not care what her mother would think as Eric stepped on the gas. They sped down the road while the fireworks went off behind them.
She cried “Stop!”
Eric looked at her and said “What?”
“Stop, please, stop.” She was almost in tears. She couldn’t believe she was doing this, but she couldn’t go on with it.
“I’m sorry Eric, but I can’t. I love my parents too much and Jesus says that if we don’t forgive others than he won’t forgive us.” It just tumbled out of her mouth.
“Are you crazy? You don’t know what your missing Annie. They’re just old fogies. We’re young; we’ve got the whole world in our hands.”
Annabelle shook her head and said, “No, God has the whole world in his hands and I choose to obey.” She got out of the car and ran like a little girl back to the yard.
She all but tripped over her mother as she threw her arms around her and cried, “I’m so very sorry mother! I forgive you!”
Annabelle never felt so good in her whole life.
