He held her small, fragile hand as she lay motionless on the soft mat. He had piled it high with soft sheepskins to make her as comfortable as possible. Her breath came in shallow puffs, dark circles framed her eyes.
His mind trailed back over the years. They had been together for a very long time. They had traveled many roads together, seen famine and plenty, war and peace, love and anger. They had given birth to many children, and seen their children’s children born, down to the fifth generation.
He smiled as he wiped a tear from his eye. He loved her so. She was his life, his love, his joy, and the mother of his pride. Her hair was a soft white halo around her head. It had once trailed over her shoulders and down her back in long, glorious black tresses. Her eyes, so sunken with age, had once been the light of his world, piercing deep into his soul with their crystal sharp blue.
Where had the time gone? It just seemed like yesterday that they had said their marriage vows; yesterday they had conceived their first son, yesterday she had given birth to a miracle. He looked out the tent door flapping quietly in the cool evening breeze. The moon was full and bright, the stars twinkled in the late autumn sky, the cattle and sheep grazed peacefully on the long tender grass. A scene he had witnessed a billion times, a billion yesterdays.
He closed his eyes and sent a silent prayer to El Elohim. He asked for strength and guidance for he was lost without her standing beside him, cooking for him, caring for him, tending to his every need as she had always done; helping him make decisions, walking with him in the fields as he talked to the Father, supporting him, encouraging him, uplifting him.
He thought back with regret on the many times he had taken her for granted, upset her, disappointed her. She had always held her peace and loved him no matter what. She was a good woman. She was his soul-mate. He sighed deeply and then turned as he heard her voice softly singing. She sang words to a song he had made for her a long, long, time ago. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Her eyes were focused on his as her lips moved slowly, her right hand held over her heart and her left reaching out for his. He took her hand and held it to his face as she sang,
“The Lord our God is one Lord,
He is greatly to be praised.
He is holy and glorious,
from us a nation he has raised.
He has given us joy and laughter,
sons and daughters by his hand.
He has conquered all our enemies,
Who were spread throughout the land.
He gave us peace in times of war,
Water in times of drought.
Food in times of famine,
We have never done without.
He gave us a love so deep,
It could never be undone.
He gave us a prized possession,
Isaac our first son.
He blessed us when we doubted,
He forgave us when we sinned.
He showed us love and mercy,
He has always been our friend.
At this her voice trailed off. He looked up and seen that she had gone in peace, like she had seen El Elohim Himself. He closed her eyes and put the hand he was holding on top of the one on her heart. Tears ran down his cheeks as he finished the song.
The mighty God in heaven,
Has bound our souls together.
With cords of love and pain,
From storms we’ve had to weather.
Abraham’s voice caught in his throat and he couldn’t go on. He hugged and kissed Sarah one last time and said, “Until we meet again my love.”
