The smell of chocolate chip cookies lingered through the air, “Momma, can I have one?” I asked as I rushed in. “Not right now, you’ll ruin your supper.”
“Just one, Momma.”
“Not till after supper, now run along.”
I looked at the delicious cookies. One cookie wouldn't ruin my supper.
Momma left the kitchen and sat on the back porch. I snatched a cookie, and ran to the cornfield. I ran and finally sat down to enjoy my cookie. The chocolate had melted all over my hands.
I rubbed my chocolaty hands on my dress and realized I made a big mistake. Momma would know now, she'd know I'd taken that cookie. I sat down at the end of the corn row and cried, tears ran down my dress. I saw a bucket of water at the end of the cornrow. I scooped up a handful of the dirty water and tried to rub off the mess, but it made a bigger mess.
I lay there and contemplated my dilemma. I could lie about the cookie, and just say my dress got dirty from playing in the cornfield. I could say it was dirty when I was playing with the ducks, but Momma would remember it wasn't dirty when I asked for the cookie.
I saw a scarecrow two rows down with an old dress on, and ran to it, taking off my dirty dress I hid it between some corn rows, and lay down to rest. Before I knew it, I was sound asleep.
When I woke up it was dusk. I could hear someone calling me, “Sarah, where are you? It's time for dinner.”
Oh, no, it was Momma, she'd find out what I had done, I crouched quietly beneath the corn and hid.
“Supper’s ready,” Momma called and turned around to go back into the house.
“Where could she be?” I heard her asking Daddy.
“Sarah?” he yelled.
“You'd better go call the Sheriff,” he told Momma. She ran into the house crying.
They were going to call the Sheriff. I lay lower to the ground hoping they wouldn't find me. I heard the sirens in the distance and neighbors were running down the road to help with the search. I wanted to yell out, “I'm sorry, Momma, I'm right here.” But now I was embarrassed.
The search began. I knew it wouldn't take long to find me, so I stood up and hunched over ran as fast as I could into the cornfield, I saw an old log along the creek off to the right and ran to hide.
“We found a dress,” someone yelled, and I heard my Momma wail, “What kind of mother am I? Just today she wanted a cookie, and I said, 'no', what would’ve it hurt.”
“You did right, it's not your fault, it has nothing to do with the cookie, we just need to find her right now. You stay here and rest while we look,” said Daddy.
“No, I have to go and look. I have to find her,” she said.
I lay quietly in the spot by the log just listening.
“If we don't find her soon we'll call out the dogs.” I didn't move an inch as they slowly passed me by.
Then I heard Momma just feet away from me. “Sarah, honey, I know where you are. I used to hide there myself when I was a little girl, you can come out now.”
I raised myself up slowly to see Momma standing on the other side of the log, tears on her face. I ran to her and threw myself in her arms, “I took the cookie after you told me not to, I got my dress all dirty and ruined it, I thought you'd be mad at me so I hid. I'm sorry, Momma.”
Momma gathered me up in her arms, and held me close. “I forgive you. We've been looking everywhere for you. Then I remembered, when I was about your age, I took a nickel from my daddy's dresser, and spent it on candy, and I was scared he wouldn't love me anymore, so I ran and hid -- right here at this same log. Let's just thank God you are safe. I love you. Sarah”
Momma carried me back to the house as she called out to the others that she had found me.
