"Hi Chris, this is Shelly it's been so long since I've seen you. I am taking a trip home and wanted to talk. Do you think we could meet at our place? I will be there Saturday around noon. Love ya girl! " Shelly spoke from my answering machine.
As I sat on my porch that evening, thoughts of Shelly and our place were running through my mind. We had become friends in first grade and were inseparable. We kept in touch by phone and email, but we had not visited our special place since high school.
After we met in school, we realized that we lived just across the creek from each other. Our little town is divided by a creek. Once we discovered we lived nearby, we were always together.
A small bridge was the pathway over the creek and to each others house. The bridge was just wide enough for a single horse and rider to go over. Other than an occasional rider, it was rarely used. This was our special place!
If I was having problems and needed encouragement. We would meet there. If Shelly's parents were arguing and she needed compassion. We would meet there. It became the place we talked out all our troubles. Even though our problems sometimes remained, we still left with hope in our hearts.
It was also the place that Shelly had her first kiss. There is Shelly and her long legs hanging over the water and my short ones pumping to match her swinging legs.
"Chrissy, It was magic. He wanted to walk me home and then he stopped to look at the water." exclaimed Shelly in her suddenly grown up voice.
"And then......" anxiously I prodded her.
"I like you Shelly and can I kiss you and he did before I said anything ," she finished with a giggle.
We were at our bridge for a long time that day. It seemed as if we were never at a loss for words. Just like the water below us, our conversation flowed just as easily and without effort.
Why in the world would she need to meet at the bridge? This was my last thought as my wondering head hit the pillow.
Here I am at the bridge and I feel a little silly. I looked both ways before I got on the ground and put my feet over the edge. Funny how the bridge and the water are still the same as when I was a child. I guess there are some things that never change.
"I believe you are sitting in my special place!" a voice behind me interrupts my thoughts.
"How do you know it's your special place?" I mischievously challenged back.
"See those letters carved in the wood . It says S-C-B-F." declared the voice.
"Oh Shelly, you remembered that?" I cried as we embraced.
"S-Shelly, C-Chrissy and B-F is for best friends." we both said at the same time.
For the next hour, we shared all the happenings in our lives. I told her about meeting my fiancé's family and she shared how her youngest just started kindergarten. Finally she took a deep breath and stopped talking.
"Shell, why did you come here?"
"This bridge has always been the place we shared all the important things with each other Chrissy, this bridge is a place of peace and joy to me."
"It is to me too." I agreed.
"Chris, someone has come into my life and given me that peace and joy this bridge used to give me. I've become a Christian and asked God to be in my life. He's become that bridge for me. He's the friend I always run too and just like you Chrissy He never lets me down."
We talked for a long time and I could see delight in her eyes. Her words had purpose behind them. It made me wish I could have such happiness.
"Chris, Let me introduce you to my BRIDGE!" Shelly said as she grabbed my hand and we prayed.
