I turned and thought about retracing my steps, returning to the warm bed I had left. Any energy I had mustered had quickly evaporated as I thought of how much I missed our beloved lab, Domino. How could I even begin my walk without first feeling the paws of excitement pushing on my leg as a slobbery tongue lapped at my hand in a good morning greeting. Besides, there would be no one to run ahead of me nosing out critters that otherwise would jump out and startle me. It just didn’t seem right to go ahead with my walk without my beloved friend.
Domino had joined our family as a birthday present for our daughter’s first birthday. He was just a puppy then and I smiled as I recalled at how we had decided on a name. He quickly became our daughter’s favorite friend and they loved running around the yard chasing one another. During these chases, Domino would under estimate the power of his playful lunges toppling her over into a fit of giggles upon the grass. His little paws pushing against her balance always reminded me of watching a domino hitting the next domino until it crashed onto the table. Though he had no dots on his black fur, he was our Domino. Now our Domino was lost.
I decided to go ahead with my walk and to compensate my heavy heart I began to pray. Lord, I know Domino is “just a dog” but he is just so much part of our family. I am feeling so sad this morning not having him here with me. I know you care about each of our hurts and this morning my heart hurts because my loyal companion and friend is missing. Your forte is seeking out the lost, and you are a God who cares about the lone sheep that strays. So Lord, it may seem a bit silly that I am praying about my dog, but I really miss him. Could you please bring my lost Domino back home?” In the depths of faith it was quite shallow but it was a prayer full of hope.
A few weeks later Domino had not returned. My hope faded as each day passed. However, God expertise in bringing home the lost had not wavered. One evening as we pulled into the driveway, there he was sitting on the front porch, his tail wagging excitedly at the sight of our van. God had answered my prayer and our lost “sheep” had come home.
