My grandma’s insanity wore ever increasing holes in the frayed edges of my patience. “No Grandma, today is Thursday, there is no mass today…” or “yes, your crochet hook is right in front of you where you set it down,” had become familiar refrains. My journal was growing thick with odd behaviors. I had devoted a whole page to “Things I never knew could be butter covers,” not to mention “Odd places to find cookware,” and “Phrases I never imagined I’d have to say.” At least the stress of her husband‘s stroke and subsequent move to the rehabilitation center never had a chance to truly set in. The kindness of the Alzheimer’s, I supposed, was that, although he’d been two months gone, had always left her “just three days ago.”
And now we were going to stay. The pang gripped my heart so tightly I nearly doubled over. Home was my hope, my anchor to the world of sanity. Lord! I let out a sigh. I had asked to be used, but this was not the mission I had envisioned. A week long trip to Honduras to help plant a church, that was better, or how about caring for orphans in Romania for a month? Why send me to California? Why separate my from my friends and the life I knew? This wasn’t a part of my plan! I sighed a deep, heavy sigh. Then something whispered to my heart. That was it, wasn’t it? I wanted to give Him a piece of me, but God wanted more.
Finally, the words came. Through the tears I opened my lips, not in petition, but praise. “I worship you, Almighty God, there is none like You…” Melody after melody began to fill the air as I surrendered all my pain and uncertainty to Him.
As the last note faded into the sky, I knew I had to go back down. Chaos still reigned in my circumstances, but my soul was at rest.
