Stephen wandered down the street deep in thought. What was he going to do? A letter had arrived in the mail that morning with an offer of a very promising position in a big company.
Stephen’s job now was satisfying. He had a good home, a church which he loved and friends that made life so good. The only reason he was tempted by this new job offer was a salary somewhat higher than his present one. As he walked down the street, a battle was being waged in his mind.
Was this what the Lord wanted him to do? The offer sounded too good to be true. Did he really want to move to a new city? What would life be like there? But then, with more money he could buy a new car; go on bigger vacations, etc. What was most important in life? There was so much to think about and so many decisions to make.
Turning the corner, heading for home, he met Ted. Ted remarked about how deep in thought he was and wondered what going on. Stephen looked at his friend and told him how glad he was to see him. How good to have a friend that he could share his struggles with.
After listening to Stephen’s arguments back and forth, Ted said he though the answer was simple. ”You have a job that gives you that much satisfaction. Now if you take this new position have you the assurance that it will be what you want in life? Is this where the Lord wants you to be?”
After discussing this with his friend, Stephen went home. He decided to stay with his present job. The decision made, he felt a big relief and such joy as he prepared to go to work that day.
A week later his boss called him into the office and told him that because of his excellent work, he was going to give him a raise in pay.
As Stephen looked at his cheque he realized that now his wages were higher than the job he had been tempted to take. How thankful he was for the decision to stay. He knew that he had learnt that there is more to life and money and all it can bring.
