The service was scheduled to begin exactly at eleven as always and was to end at noon right on the dot. Pastor was very strict about that. He would say: “God is very organized and proper and we are to imitate Him.”
There was about five minutes before the start of that glorious day when a loud commotion interrupted my joy. I whirled around to see a dirty looking fellow trying his best to push past two of our finest deacons. They were kindly trying to prevent him from entering the front door.
“Let me in he demanded. I have as much right to be as you do.”
Jack the head deacon replied. “Sir, this is a special day for us. Everyone else here is dressed for the occasion while you sir our filthy. God home and prepare yourself properly then come back.”
The man stopped pushing and stepped back. In sadness he replied. “But, I don’t have a home.”
Jack answered as any good deacon would. “Come back tomorrow sir and go to the front office. We have an indigent fund for people like you and I’m sure we can be of some help.”
“Good for him.” I thought then turned to prepare myself for the glory to come.
The pastor arrived and all stood to applaud. The choir jumped in and the sound must have been oh so pleasing to God’s ears. One person after another stood and gave their testimonies of what they had given up in order to give to the building fund. We applauded and cheered as each saint took his or her prepared seats at the front of the church.
Before I knew it, it was noon. We had a great time and I was sure God was pleased with us all and this fine place we built for Him.
Everyone stood and shook hands and hugged and congratulated one another. I was moving toward the back when a bright glow caught my eye behind one of the side wall stained glass windows. It was a picture of an angel lifting Jesus from the earth and carrying Him to God. The strange thing was there were no lights behind the picture.
Someone yelled out. “It must be a sign from God to let us know how pleased He is with what we’ve done here today. We all shouted hallelujah, over and over and praised God for being with us.
In the midst of our joy we heard a child call to us from the door.
“Come and see.” He said. We all rushed expecting to see the angel that was illuminating the window.
Instantly all was silent as we saw the poorly dressed man on his knees outside the window praying; and yes, there was an angel outside the window, but it was standing over the man, not behind the window.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, so I called out. “Angel, why are you outside with this man, when you could have come in here with us and seen true worship?”
The angel smiled and said: “He and I have been in true worship since your service began. This man has been praying for you and this place; praying that you would let God in.”
