The results couldn’t be correct! She stared at the positive pregnancy scan in her hand. She and her husband had determined years ago that their family was complete. Even though they had conceived their children the old fashioned way and had even left the sex of their children up to God, they were completely content with their two girls and one boy. Their friends had thought it was “cute” they didn’t determine the sex of their baby like most people did. But even their Christian friends had been very critical when they didn’t screen their embryo’s DNA for deformities or imperfections. “You are just gambling. In the 22nd century there is no reason to have an unhealthy baby!” a close friend had said. But she and her husband were adamant in their decision to trust God completely with their family. And He had blessed them with three wonderful children.
But as she stared at the result of the positive pregnancy scan she knew her trust was about to be tested. The result had to be wrong. Her husband had had a procedure five years ago supposedly eliminating a chance of pregnancy or implantation. To most people a positive pregnancy scan meant nothing more than a decision between taking a “deplantin” pill to eliminate the pregnancy or a nourishment treatment if a baby was desired. She knew she could borrow some “deplantins” from any neighbor. They were a common item in most women’s medicine cabinets.
She punched her husband’s symbol on the “talkie watch” she wore around her wrist and waited for his face to appear on the tiny screen. He looked busy, but even over the small screen he could tell she’d been crying. “Honey, what’s wrong?” he asked.
“I’m pregnant!”
“I’ll be right there!” he answered.
So many thoughts flashed through her mind. As a traditionist, she still believed in nursing her children and that the mother should be the primary care giver. She didn’t even own a nanny-bot. While nanny-bots, robots designed specifically for infant and young child care, were convenient, she still believed children needed flesh and blood humans to care for them. So far she felt her decision had been correct in that her children were among the very few at their school who didn’t require daily therapy and bio feedback treatments for behavior issues and phobias.
But being a traditionist required sacrifices. It meant time and commitment. She wouldn’t just program a nanny-bot and then spend her day at the spa-nasium getting relaxation and beauty treatments or sitting in exercise machines toning her body. She stayed fit actually pushing a “baby-go” that looked similar to the old fashioned strollers she’d seen pictures of in her great-great grandmother’s scrapbooks.
While she got strange looks on the streets manually pushing the “baby-go”, she felt connected to her ancestors when out walking. Her ancestors were Godly people and for generations the family’s faith had been passed down. When she felt totally alone as a practicing Christian, she would browse the big old books and not feel so alone. She had even taught her children how to carefully turn the pages of the books. With paper in short supply as a result of the ban on cutting down trees, books were considered an antique. All reading was done on “read-ios”, portable screens that contained the words of any book you downloaded into it.
As she reached for the antique family Bible she heard her husband’s air-mobile land on the roof. As the landing pod lowered him into the room, she opened the book and a piece of paper fell out. She recognized the markings as her great-great grandmothers. It was in a writing called “cursive” that was seldom seen today since everything was keyboarded. To read the writing was a slow process since it was so unfamiliar, but as she made out the words a peace came over her. Her husband sat down beside her as she read the words out loud.
“My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before any of them came to be.” Psalm 139: 15-16 (NIV)
Her husband reached for her hand and their eyes met. She smiled, realizing this child was not a medical mistake, but a miracle of the Almighty.
