Janice is sitting at her desk trying to focus on the stack of files in front of her. She is overwhelmed with exhaustion and all she really wants to do is cry until all the tears are gone.
The night before had been very trying for her. The pressures of family not understanding what was being done for Nana since her stroke, finally became very apparent when her brother called demanding that he was coming to get Nana’s car. The problem with that is, their mother, who is an only child, instructed Janice to drive the car because her truck needs to go in the shop for repairs. The whole conversation did not go well with her brother and the call to her mom afterwards, broke her heart.
Janice didn’t get much sleep at all and after two hours of meeting with the nursing home and taking care of some bank business this morning, the lack of sleep and heartache were getting to her.
It dawns on her what day it is and the fact that tonight she has to teach her weekly ESL class. She is seriously considering calling the director and asking if someone else will take her class. Wiping a few tears away that she has been trying to hold back, she grabs her coffee cup and heads to the break-room for more coffee.
When returning to her desk, she notices the little envelope in the right hand corner of her computer screen and pulls up a list of new mail. There are two messages concerning ESL classes. It’s not just work related, it’s actually someone to talk to.
The first e-mail is from a handsome young man who also teaches ESL. He seems to be in a bind and wonders if Janice will combine their classes and teach for him tonight. She gets very excited that he even asked her because they don’t converse much before or after class time. The second one is from another ESL teacher explaining how she has been ill since the previous week and just doesn’t think she can make it tonight. In astonishment, Janice stops for a moment and says, “Ok God, I’m teaching ESL tonight.” Then, of course, her next thought is, “Lord, which one shall I teach?”
She e-mails the gentleman back and tells him how funny it is that he and the other teacher both sent her e-mail within two minutes of each other, asking her to take their class. Then she e-mails the other teacher to let her know she will get another lady to take her class and Janice will teach the young man’s class.
Once the classes are taken care of, Janice begins to reflect on what just happened, “this is definitely a God thing”. God knew things weren’t going very well, He knew she needed to be at ESL, He knew she needed the experience of every meeting, every word, every moment.
