In this day and age of automatic everything,
There is still something that can make your soul sing.
To roll up your sleeves and get to work,
Ignoring your apprehension, your child’s little smirk.
Remembering the things that grandma would do.
What was good for her is good for you, too.
Back to basics again! is your battle cry.
Will this really work? Won’t know ‘til we try.
Once upon a time, maybe as a scout
So many skills you got to try out.
A needle and thread, a sewing machine.
These are the things my child’s never seen.
Trying this out for one afternoon.
The fruits of my labor will be here soon!
Got a spot on the sofa, feeling at peace.
Husband and child spy, will they never cease?
Sheer joy comes in this working by hand.
This is so necessary, you must understand.
Diligently working, connecting to the past.
But not for long will this calm feeling last.
Something’s not right, I’m getting upset.
I’ve been working for hours, but not done yet.
What am I doing? This is a bore.
No wonder back then this was called “chore.”
Okay, I’m done, I’ve made something by hand.
Somehow this didn’t fit in with the “plan.”
I’m stressed and I’m frought from doing this craft.
These things can be bought- What am I - daft?
My family have witnessed my work of great care.
I present my handiwork to them with a flair.
They look at me, with a look that is blank.
Fine. Okay. Them I won’t thank.
So I’m not the woman in Proverbs 31
But I still take pride in what I have done.
It’s a homemade pot holder, okay?!
