Being the youngest in our family meant on thing for me…I was always getting sick. It didn’t matter if it was a cold, or allergy problems, or viruses, I always seemed to be the one to get them. My mother always tried to fight illness off with over the counter products from the pharmacy and usually that did the trick, but I can remember a time when I had an illness so severe I could not go to school for days. My father prayed and asked the Lord to provide healing in my body.
Finally, a woman from our church recommended a Christian doctor to take me to in a nearby town. Mother called and the receptionist graciously squeezed an appointment in for me that same day. When we arrived, the nurse took me straight back to an examination room to wait for the doctor. I remember as the doctor was treating me, my mother talked with him about our church and how my father was the pastor. He responded with talking about how good the Lord was and how God has blessed his family practice.
After the doctor diagnosed me, he left the room for a minute and came back with a bag full of sample medicines and handed my mother the bill for his services. Tears began streaming down her face as she saw a note scribbled beside the amount that read “No charge”. The doctor explained that he also was a pastor’s kid growing up and he knew how his parents struggled financially. Years ago when he first started his practice, he had made a promise to God that he would take care of struggling pastors and their families. The Lord shows himself to us in mysterious ways!
