The difference between a policeman and a common citizen is a badge. It’s the badge that sets us apart, as it carries with it the distinction of being a “special mark, token, or device worn as a sign of allegiance, membership, authority, achievement”. (Dictionary.com) It shows us who can carry out the upholding of law, or it can bear witness to us concerning who won the annual cow milking contest. The badge is the symbol which tells us that the police have the power.
In the same way, God has given to us the gift of the Holy Spirit, by which “you were sealed”; He being “the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. (Eph. 1:13) The Greek word for seal, ‘sphragizo’, is translated to have the same meaning as a badge to an officer. Just as the badge is the mark that states an officer can carry out the law through the power of the state, the Holy Spirit is the mark that is set upon us by God that gives us the security, protection, and authority to carry out the will of God in our lives.
When we get pulled over for speeding, we don’t have to tell the policeman how to write out a ticket for the violation. They know how to do their job. That’s how they got their badge in the first place. Furthermore, they have been put through various trials and tests to prove that they are capable of handling such a tremendous responsibility. If at the end of their training they pass the test, they are awarded the honor to “protect and to serve”. They do it all for the badge.
When we get right down to it, there would be no need for law if there was no sin. The law is the standard of rules by which a society binds itself, choosing what is right and wrong in the hearts of its leaders. A policeman is only as good as the law he upholds. “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people”. (Proverbs 14:34) The law is in place to expose sin and the police are in place to bring the transgressions to justice.
As policemen for the “perfect law of liberty”, we uphold the law of the forgiveness of sins in Christ Jesus and His subsequent resurrection from the dead. We carry out our duty to protect and fight for the “faith once delivered to the saints”. We follow our Captain’s example to serve by hearing His words, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”. (Mark 10:45) We protect and we serve. Christians got a badge. What do you got?
