His wings unfurled, his long blonde hair fell past his shoulders, and across the vast skies the snow began to fall. From the inferno within, it was hard to tell snow from ash. Shadows trembled in the blaze as his legion infiltrated the burning house.
Through the smoke, the hose water, and the dwindling oxygen, a girl and her sister were on the floor crawling to find the exit. Fire drills were one thing, but doing it with the heat and coughing was another. Clutching her stuffed bunny, the younger stopped and cried as the older took her arm as they crawled.
“Keep going!”
“I’m scared!” the little one whined.
“So am I! Just keep going, okay?”
They could hear the roar of the flames, but at least things seemed to get a little cooler as the smoke lifted a little and they found a pair of yellow rubber boots. A man knelt down before them with his large arms outstretched, trying to calm the girls down.
“There you are! Don’t worry I gotcha!” the man shouted.
The little one clutched the smoke-scented man in yellow, though little else could be seen now. The older held on for dear life as his strength seemed unearthly. They didn’t even remember going down stairs, but they ended up at the window where the fire escape was. A gloved hand pointed downward to where the ladders and trucks were. The wind shifted directions between very cold and very hot, which made things as scary as the great height between them and the ground.
“Climb down there and keep going!”
The man disappeared back into the smoke-filled building. The two girls scrambled cautiously down the black iron pipes. They heard a creaking and cracking noise, but the older tugged the younger along to go faster. The little girl dropped her bunny as they ran, the older sister switching direction long enough to pick it and her sister up. Looking upwards, the older paused to scream as the floors above where their apartment was collapsed. The man who saved them probably was caught in that. A couple of tears streamed down her face, her sister unable to stop screaming, but she just kept going, not looking down, nor up.
Eventually, they reached the bottom, her parents rushed to them and wept in praise of God. The snow fell with the ashes over the area. The firemen were confused as to who was up there, however, as the closest firemen were six stories underneath where the girls lived.
He took off his helmet from a nearby building, letting his long blonde hair fall past his shoulders as the snow continued to drift.
