While she got herself and her younger sisters prepared, their mother made the breakfast.
It was the morning of the inaugural service of their church's new local branch. And the Armstrong families weren’t prepared to be late as their daughters were in the choir.
The service went well, and the turn out was quite impressive. Everyone that was present were requested to proceed to the Church Garden, the venue for some light refreshment and the usual “open question forum” to mark the inauguration.
The Reverend offered a song to worship God and prayed for the refreshments they were about to have, then the buffet started.
Jennifer had a question once the open question forum began.
And her question came up first.
"Sir, she began, you raised a song a few minutes back and my question is based on this".
She then went ahead and gave the live account of a firing squad event as shown on the television.
There were these five men sentenced to death for their heinous crime by firing squad in another state.
Four of them were dead instantly at the touch of the bullets.
But not the fifth man, the bullets fell off his body like feathers unlike the others.
All the man kept doing was singing a song, and it was this song you sang!
After some ten minutes of futile attempt by the executioners to terminate the man's life for it was as though the song he was singing converted the bullets to chalk as Jesus converted water into wine at Galilee,
the man now uttered a statement that stunned me most.
He said, "O.K, I release myself now, and commit my soul into the Hands of the impartial Judge, who knows he is guiltless of this crime!"
Hardly, had he finished these words than the bullets flooded his body with blood and he bowed his head!
She now asked, how come a criminal sang that song and it had an influence on the bullets?
There was a graveyard silence as all eating and drinking stopped stunned!
The Reverend then repeated the song solemnly this time, so the meaning and power in the song could make sense to the people.
"My soul doth magnify the Lord,
And my spirit praise His Name,
For death could not hold Him Captive,
Even in the grave, Jesus is Lord"!
I heard of the incident too, Sister Jennifer.
That man actually was a Christian, but purely a victim of mistaken identity as the real culprits confessed. He just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Since he hadn't any lawyer to defend him or money to afford one, he was sentenced to die with the criminals.
But do you know his death wasn’t in vain?
No not at all, he continued, the reports that followed that Christian brother's execution on T.V. produced the highest number of converts unto God in that state last month.
Many of those people came to the Lord by watching the broadcast said, “the song the man was singing never stopped singing in their ears ceaselessly!
The story is similar to that of Mary who had to break her alabaster box which ministered to Jesus before His crucifixion too, and made the Master utter that anywhere the gospel is been ministered the memorial of what she has done will be remembered!
St. Mark 14vs.8-9.
.She hath done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying.
.Verily I say unto you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. (KJV)
Though the brother died ruefully, yet he left a song which was a melody in God's ear drum and an indelible tune evangelizing for God that even the converts couldn’t forget the sound of the music till they gave their lives unto Christ wholeheartedly.
Praise God!
