Ayo felt as if the world has come to an end. He just heard the sad news that he lost his immediate elder brother to the cold hands of death. The news came to him as a great shock and he was really devastated. With tears pouring from his eyes, he tried to imagine the sound of the gunshot and blood streaming down the neck of his brother as the news was being broken. “Oh! What an unfortunate turn of fate” he said, sobbing.
Akin, the deceased brother of Ayo loved him and saw him through college after the death of their father. He took it upon himself to ensure the proper upkeep of his younger brother, was a great mentor and also a benefactor for the family at large.
A crowd of sympathizers was already thronging the family house to express their condolence and phone calls were coming in intermittently. Ayo was lost in thoughts and virtually blanked out so much so that the words of comfort from sympathizers did not mean much to him.
Ayo realized much later that experience in the valley may not be the best but it is in the valley that we usually come to terms with ourselves and meet with our creator. This realization came after bouts of depression as a result of the trauma and general feeling of emptiness. This emptiness had to be filled and was indeed filled by the presence of the Living God. There were prayer and counseling sessions. The pain would cease in due time and indeed time heals all wounds.
Time to face the reality of life again and move on, and Ayo remembered all they had planned together, hopes and aspirations and tears rolled down his cheeks for the umpteenth time. It is true after all like one aunty said that tears for a lost loved one is not for a single day, but a lifetime. Many years after the loss, there are still tears of joy or sorrow as memory floods.
Looking back, Ayo gives gratitude to God for pulling him out of depression and turning his sorrow to joy and mourning into dancing. It was in the valley that God beckoned him to greater service in His Kingdom and he has great course to be grateful for what God has done for him and through him. “Weeping may endure for a night but joy comes in the morning” … “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose”.
