The King’s Priceless Treasure
Once upon a time there was a perfect kingdom. It was ruled by the wisest King who ever existed. He was just and none of His subjects ever lacked anything. It was a glorious kingdom of light, never darkness because in their land, night had never existed. It was a joyous place where no one ever got sick or felt sad or even tired. The love of the King was known far and wide by everyone who lived there.
One day, the great King summoned His only Son to His side.
“My dear Son,” said the King, “There is a special treasure I desire you to obtain for me. I trust no one else with this, for the enemy, who once tried to overthrow me, desires it, too.”
“Father, tell me your desire so I can fulfill your will,” His Son replied.
“It will cost you an immense amount, but I desire it more than anything in my kingdom. You will trade your place in the kingdom for dirt. You will traverse a lonely road. Great men will not recognize who you are. You will have no authority or status in their eyes, because they will not believe You are my Son. You will be despised, injured, rejected, and betrayed for it. Your crown will be one of thorns, your robe, one of mockery. You must suffer unimaginable pain at the hands of those weaker than You. You will be changed from Prince to pauper to common criminal. At the time of Your greatest need, your few close friends will forsake You. Finally, You must pay for this treasure with blood…Your own. I ask Your all, my dear Son.”
The Son looked steadily into his father’s eyes, now glistening with tears…the first ever in the kingdom. A steward standing by asked the King:
“My Lord, what could possibly be of such value that you would ask all of that from your own child?”
And as the great King raised His head and answered him, an awed silence filled the kingdom.
“A single human soul…”
