When we are growing up, most of us have big dreams for our future, dreams of success, fortune, even fame. My parents were always supportive of my dreams. They told me I could be anything I wanted, from following in my father’s footsteps of being an Air Force Pilot, to following in my mother’s footsteps and being a homemaker. I remember my mother telling me, “No matter what you do, God will bless you, and you will be special.”
That statement forever changed how I thought about things. It made me realize that God uses everyone for his own purposes. I didn’t have to be famous like Julia Roberts or Billy Graham to be called by God. I am called by God in my daily life, by focusing on being a good wife and mother, and doing well at my job. By caring for my friends, God’s love will shine through. It’s living by example and surrendering to God’s will. Even saying “thank you” to the teenager that bags my groceries at the supermarket shows God’s love.
My little girl dreams of being an actress or a pilot are long gone now. Instead, I have dreams for a writing career, and dreams for my children’s success and happiness. I probably won’t be famous or wealthy. But, beyond fame and riches, is God’s direction for my life, which is more important. My purpose is to live a good life, have faith, and love my family. It’s the simple things that allow God’s light to shine through me.
By following God’s will, whether I completely understand his purposes or not, I hope to stand before the Lord one day and hear him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
