We’re all familiar with the children’s song, but, as adults, where are we truly keeping our joy? Do our material possessions give us joy? Are we content because we have an expensive home, a new car, or a top of the line boat? Are we happy because our children attend the expensive private school across town, or because we can afford to buy designer clothes and bags? If this rings a bell in your heart, you can be certain that your joy is not where it belongs!
God wants us to be joyful all the time, no matter how much money we have or how many things we own. He longs for us to have true joy, regardless of our circumstances or problems.
Don’t confuse happiness with joy. Joy is a real, bottom of the heart contentment that can only come from a soul that is right before God. Happiness is a feeling, a fleeting emotion that can come and go like the wind, breezing in and out of our lives. Joy moves in to stay.
Where are you keeping your joy? Are you holding it securely in your heart, with your focus on things eternal? Or is your joy riding beside you in your new SUV, waiting for you to get bored and discontent? Is your joy tagging along in your new purse, just waiting to fall out and get walked on when you find something newer and cuter?
Open your heart wide to receive joy today. “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” John 16:24.
