TITLE: Special Delivery

Special Delivery

The delivery room was dim and the young soon-to-be father was as nervous as he had ever been. He wiped his palms on his pants numerous times as he stared at his wife. She was in pain but there was little he could do about it. She was about to give birth to their first child. A son. They had debated over a name for months. This was such an important milestone in both of their lives. They had wanted this for so long, prayed over his arrival so diligently long before he was even present within his mother’s womb.
It had been so long…there had been years of trying and years of disappointment. There had been countless doctor’s appointments and so many bills that needed paying. Even so, on they went. And they were both certain that God had placed in them the desire to have children for a reason. Certainly He would not have given them such a strong desire for children if He had not intended on making that desire a reality for them. In the beginning, it had been exciting. Having children! The age difference between them was five years, she being older than he was, and so there was no time to waste! At least, that was how she felt. They quickly committed themselves to having children as soon as possible, whenever the Lord would permit them to do so. They soon found out that perhaps that wouldn’t be in the cards for them for a while. Time went by and still, nothing. Doctors were optimistic. They felt that with the proper treatment, they could certainly help this young couple and make their dreams for children come true. It wasn’t long before those treatments began and the bills started piling up. They stayed on top of them and kept their prayers before the Lord. It was surprising to them how much God taught them during that time. Countless lessons about depending on Him and leaving things in His capable Hands. Lessons about being completely honest with Him about their frustrations even toward Him! It never occurred to them that they would need to learn so much. However, it wasn’t long and God made their desires a reality.
The young father was snapped back to reality by sounds of pushing coming from the delivery table. He hurried to his wife’s side to help her breathe and hold her hand. He let her squeeze as hard as she needed to and never told her she was squeezing too hard. He was her rock, as God has been his all through these years of waiting.
And then…he was here.
His cry pierced the air like nothing either of them had ever heard before. It was amazing. They both cried. They cried the way one cries when it’s impossible to control himself. All of the praying, all of the trusting, all of God’s promises…he was here. Their little boy. He was healthy. He was theirs. With tears in their eyes, they looked at each other and they knew his name. Nathaniel, which means gift of God. Neither of them had ever felt such love in their hearts. At that moment, they couldn’t love anything more. They simply adored that little baby. So much they would give their lives for him. And God spoke to their hearts in those precious seconds. He said, My children, that’s how I love you.
Oh, how they cried when their Heavenly Father spoke those words to their hearts. Their hearts were full to over-flowing with love for God, for Nathaniel and for each other. Right there in the delivery room, the husband got down on his knees, ignoring the stares that he was sure came his way. He thanked God for all that He had done. For His perfect timing. For His tender love and care. And for his beautiful wife. And when He stood up, a smiling nurse was waiting to put a sleeping bundle in his arms. The couple wiped away their tears, as for the first time they looked upon the face of their little Nathaniel.

You sure captured the emotion well. I remember the first time I witnessed the miracle of birth as a student nurse, same overwhelming sense of wonder at our awesome God and His marvelous creation! Good writing---I was back in uniform in the delivery room with you!

A good reflection on the birth of a child. But just wait until you see your first grandchild being born. Different intensity of love. This is good writing - easy to read - flows well - gives good emotions.
