Inner Strength

The Source of Our Strength

What is this thing called inner strength? I hear so much about it in the news, the media, movies and books. What is the essence of inner strength? Where do I go to learn about it? How can I cultivate it in my life?

I am afraid that I am lacking in this noble quality. I know I am a coward. I know that my fears overtake me at times and I feel small, helpless and insecure. The world is a scary place after all. Just watch the news for a few hours ( or maybe just a few minutes of CNN will do). There are very real dangers out there. Sometimes, I feel like all the world is dark and scary, menacing and forbidding. Predators lurking around every corner. Disasters just waiting to happen. Death just a brief moment away.

I don’t like feeling this way. I don’t like being a coward at heart. So, how am I to deal with it and make a change? Over the past several years I have tried to boost my “inner strength” quotient by reading books by authors who have faced the problem of fear and been able to overcome or at least deal with their problem successfully. I know the only true place to find a cure for fear lies in the pages of scripture however. It is in God’s word that I can find the inner strength I long for and I can claim the power to overcome fear and anxiety.

God has said that He has given us a spirit of power not of fear or timidity (2 Tim 1:7 NIV). He promises to be with us even when we walk through the valley of the shadow of death. (Psalm 23:4 NIV). He commands us to “fear not” numerous times throughout His word. These are the truths that we must cling to in order to overcome fear and to have the “inner strength” that we desire.

Inner strength is truly the indwelling of the ultimate strength of God. It is His strength living within us. Giving us courage when we feel so small and all alone. It is God that gives the strength freely and without reservation. It is I that must claim the strength and not forget in moments of weakness to pray for it. It can truly change our lives.

In giving up my fear, I can claim some amazing blessings. Peace, joy, happiness, and yes...inner strength....from God. The giver of all good things.

Strength can only come when we are weak, and only through Christ does he strengthen us. You did a fine job of describing why we lean on HIM, and why we need to let go of fear which is not of God. I enjoyed the content of your writing, thank you.

Your message is clear and easy to read. We all need to be reminded about inner strength

Thank you for this well-stated reminder of just where our inner strength comes from! May the Lord grant you freedom and peace from the Holy Spirit.

You have some great thoughts on where to go to find strength here, but they get a little lost in your introduction.

I think this would be stronger if it started with the third paragraph and expanded on leaning into God for strength. You could take us to specific examples of times you needed to go to God for strength and show us how He helped you.

God bless you as you continue to share your faith through your writing.

The world is truly a scary place as you have pointed out and so many of us are cowards. However, relying on God for the strength that you recognize as coming from Him emboldens you as well as other 'cowards' to face all challenges.

This is a well written article. Nice job!

Someone once said that Christianity is a crutch. He meant that to be an insult, but actually it's not - whatever would we do if we didn't have the Lord to lean on? Better a crutch than a free fall to disaster in these terrifying times. Good job.

Great example of being honest and truthful about our fleshly weakness. Just the kind of "ground" God can root HIS might! And yes, does not the scripture tell us, in our weakness His Strength is made more evident.
Blessings,
Carol

Your writing shows a transparency which readers will be draw to. One suggestion- Don't feel that you have to nail down the answers to your questions. Share what you have learned and leave room for the reader to explore it more. Nice work and good thoughts.

What I liked best about this piece is that you stayed in the 1st person. That kept your message very real and powerful, and allowed your readers to make the application to their own lives.
