TITLE: The Master Holds Your Key
By Kim Stairs

Bound in our prisons we come to Christ. Most of us choose to stay bound, even though it is torturous and haunts us. What is your prison? Could it be that you are locked in religion? Our prisons come in all shapes and sizes. The prison in your life could be doubt, unbelief, unforgiveness, a sin you cannot break free from, or a habit that is destroying your life.
Regardless of your prison, The Anointed One has the power and the key to set you free. Although the key may also come in different sizes based on God’s timing and the severity of our prisons, bigger locks need bigger keys.
Faith is a key given to us as a gift when we surrender to the Lord Jesus in our life. Our faith grows as we grow as Christians. God’s Word also contributes to the maturing of our faith. Romans 10:17 says, “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the Word of Christ.”(NIV Study Bible, Zondervan Publishing House, 1985) The first key we need to open the lock of our prison is faith. It takes believing God to do the work in your life. We need to believe His Word is true for our life. God’s inspired Word is the Truth that is needed when the facts in our life are opposing us. Unlock the doubt/unbelief in your life. John 20: 26b-27, “Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace, be with you… stop doubting and believe.’” (NIV Study Bible, Zondervan Publishing House, 1985)
Are you bound by the law or set free by the Holy Spirit? Religion is a prison that keeps us from an intimate relationship with Jesus. It binds us with rules and traditions. The Old Testament reveals our guilt. It also shows us an awesome and worthy God. It is full of mercy and people who radically obeyed Jehovah before the prophecies were fulfilled. Religion holds us back from true worship, from being free to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, and most of all holds us to self righteousness.
Galatians 3:23-24, “Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.” (NIV Study Bible, as above) This is not to say that we do not heed the Kingdom principles for our life found in the Old Testament. Full of God’s promises and character, I often find myself lost in the pages. Reach out to the Master, for the keys to unlock religion are: Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
Unforgiveness is a shackle that holds us in our prisons when the door has been opened. We can try to get free, but we hold ourselves there by our own accord. Although the situations that hurt us and the people that hurt us are terrible, unforgiveness only locks the person holding onto the offense. Unforgiveness leads us to anger, resentment, and bitterness. Those are harder prisons to be released from that grow and become deeply rooted in our heart. Jesus says in Mathew 6:14-15, “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” (NIV Study Bible, as above) Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a choice and lived out by faith. It is the key to your freedom, and Jesus waits for you to choose it.
Are you bound by an invisible fortress of sin that imprisons you? Sin is only broken by one key, repentance. Repentance is not just saying you’re sorry, but turning away from that which holds you. Repentance is allowing the power and anointing of Jesus to break the strongholds in your life. In John 8: 34-36 Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth everyone who sins is a slave to sin... So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (NIV Study Bible, Zondervan Publishing House, 1985 parentheses added by author)
Luke 4: 18-19 Jesus states that He is anointed to proclaim freedom for the prisoners, release the oppressed, and proclaim the year of Lord’s favor (NIV). Make this your break out year.
