Living beyond
Ourselves
Occurs when we refuse
To allow selfish desire
To have its way...
Living beyond
Selfish gain
Brings about joy
And prevents
Needless pain...
We cannot live
Within the walls
We create
With selfishness --
For without
Living beyond
Ourselves
We will never
Be fully blessed...
Living beyond
Selfish desire
Is placing the needs
Of others
Above our very own...
In that effort made
Then and only then
Do we discover
Greater joy
Than we have ever known...
Living beyond
Ourserlves
Is the answer
To selfishness
Before the face of man
And opens up
The door
With an open hand...
Living beyond
Ourselves
Will be the answer
To the question
Posed to man --
The question of
Do we live for self alone
Or live with
Open heart and hand...
It is truly
In living beyond
Ourselves
That we become
The best that we can be
And find the person
Who will
Leave this earth
One day for Heaven
Where selfishness
Will be absent
For all
ETERNITY...

I think your title says it all. It's hard to do otherwise, isn't it? You gave us food for thought...

Good job. Makes me long for heaven.
Amy Davis02/22/05
Very true and written very well.

Very good points. In selfishness we attempt to please ourselves but the only true blessing comes when we deny ourselves. I would enjoy your poem more if your lines were not so abrupt. Maybe combine some?
Phyllis Inniss 02/26/05
Living beyond is going that extra mile for someone else and making that sacrifice for others that we would appreciate if done for us. You said it all in your poem.
