Therefore, I was assigned the task of conducting the test and collecting the answer sheets. Besides writing the test myself I also supervised the other students to ensure that there was absolute silence in class. My classmates had branded me as, “the secret agent” for my teacher. I am a sort of person who invariably claimed to be the monitor of the class. By virtue of inheritance, being sincere, simple, spiritual, scriptural, steady, selfless, strict, studious, servant-like and not showing sectarianism symbolized me.
Not all will agree to a scenario like this. In the Bible we see that when Saul was appointed by God to be king over the whole of Israel there was a gang of people who right royally questioned, “Is this fellow going to save the people of Israel? Is he going to wage wars for us?” Likewise, being jealous over my uncrowned position as a monitor of the class, a group of students protested. When I warned that I will tell the teacher about their rude behavior most of them became quiet but three among them continued to criticize me.
While the other students remained in absolute silence and wrote the exam this gang of three went to the extent of daring to copy the answers directly from the text book. They stated, “we were not prepared for the exam.” I sternly questioned, “Would you dare to give this answer to the teacher? Hardly there is fifteen days left for the exam. How could you act in this manner? I will definitely report this to the teacher.” They had no regards for me whatsoever. They retorted, “That is none of your business.” I felt humiliated but nonetheless never gave up on the responsibility given into my hands.
The following day I handed over the answers sheets to the class
teacher and made known to her that three students had copied. Immediately they were summoned. Anger brewed as the teacher told, “Quick! Get out of class and kneel down! Study those three chapters on which the test was conducted and then step into the class. You will be allowed only if Esther approves that you have learnt the lessons.” Those words fell like honey drops on my tongue.
Now, I least expected this reward for my sincerity. I felt like a white peacock spreading its plume with great pride. Simultaneously I also felt ashamed for bringing about such a punishment in public for them. However, I had no regrets because my inner intention was to make them achieve a good score in the board exam. Fear of the secret agent gripped them and somehow all three of them studied those three chapters and were permitted inside.
Whenever I tried to reconcile, they recoiled. Two of them did reconcile a few days before the exam. However, one student named Milan stood still as a statue and her heart was hard as a rock till the end hating to let go the ego. The board exam got over and after two months the results were declared. I was one among the toppers with ninety nine percent in Mathematics and eighty four percent in Chemistry.
Our section in the entire school was declared centum pass percentage of students. The other two sections had two students each who had failed. Near the bulletin board, Milan grasped my hands with tears in her eyes. We met face to face. She had a narrow escape with a forty marks – exactly the pass mark, in Chemistry. She confided, “Thank you Esther! Had you not made me to kneel down and study I wouldn’t have been able to face the class today. Forgive me.” I had already forgiven because my heart bubbled with joy for having been branded, “the secret agent”.
