A little girl with golden curls around her face squealed , “Catch me, Daddy, catch me.” A dark haired man turned around with a big smile and strolled toward her. She leaped into his arms giggling joyfully as he twirled her through the air. She felt so alive and safe.
A loud, piercing noise awoke Rachael from her dream. Instinctively she reached her hand across the bedside table turning off the annoying alarm. At first she was disoriented to time and place but as she sit up in bed she realized she had been dreaming about her dad. He had died almost a year ago and his death had left a huge void in her life.
She slid onto the side of the bed and noticed how cold the room was. She slipped her feet into the Donald Duck house shoes her mom had given her for Christmas. How silly this felt for a thirty year old woman and how typical of her mother to give her such a gift. Rachael felt that her mother never wanted to let her grow up and have her own life. However, her mom did want her to marry and have her some beautiful grandchildren. Unfortunately, the only male in her life was her cat Max and he did not care if she wore duck slippers and neither did she at that moment. If she didn’t hurry she would be late for work. She hurriedly dressed and fed Max and then was out the door.
She made it to the subway just on time. When she got off the subway she walked to her office building and then rode the crowded elevator to the 10th floor. At her cubical she found a note from Kate. She met Kate only a few days after her father died. She had been a terrific friend and listened to all her woes. She always invited her to church on Friday.
The workday was long but finally came to a close. She found Kate waiting for her downstairs. She told Kate she would go to church with her. Surprised Kate stammered, “Great, I will pick you up at 9:45 sharp Sunday morning.”
Sunday morning came quickly but Rachael was up early. Kate was true to her word and exactly on time. As soon as they arrived Kate introduced Rachael to Pastor Ron. They found a place to sit as the worship started. As Pastor Ron spoke Rachael felt glued to every word he spoke. It was like rain on her drought stricken soul. He read a verse that talked about casting your cares on God. The pastor explained that “to cast” meant to throw yourself into God’s arms just like a small child throws himself into the arms of his father because he trust that he will catch him. Tears began to stream down her face as she recalled the dream she had about her father. Then the pastor spoke about the scriptures which say we must come to God as little children because “of such is the kingdom of God“. It was more than Rachael could bear. She had hardly made it out the door when she burst into tears. Kate followed her out a few seconds later. “Do you want to leave?” Kate asked. Rachael quietly nodded yes.
As they sat in the car Kate prayed and asked the Lord what to do. Rachael finally broke the silence and shared with Kate about the dream and how Pastor Ron’s words had been exactly what she had experienced. Kate explained to her that the Lord had expertly orchestrated everything in her life to lead her to Him. She ended with the statement, “God wants to be those comforting arms you can fall into Rachael.” Rachael understood she had tried to escape everyone and everything but the thing she most needed to escape from was herself. She had to let go of controlling her life and let God control it. Kate led her in a simple prayer to God stating the things on her heart.
Later that evening as she sat on the couch with Max she said, “Max, old man ,it has been quite a day but the greatest day of my life.” She looked down at her duck slippers and couldn’t wait to get them on her feet for they would remind her everyday she was to “come as a little child.”
