Demas grinned at his boss. The dark recesses of the hall glimmered with a faint light.
“Do you really think you can do it? Jimmy means business with Jesus. How are you going to capture him?”
“Wait and see. I’ll steal the keys to his heart. You, my young friend, will get a crash course on how to handle things in enemy territory.”
The two scampered off to find Jimmy Christian. Lester frowned. Demas looked horrified.
“Look at the way he is so engrossed in the Bible,” groaned Lester, “that’s the first thing we have to deal with.”
“Distract him. Let him entertain himself to death.”
In a few minutes, Jimmy knelt in prayer. Now prayer can be a real time eater, and it seemed like forever before he rose and got dressed for the day.
Snorting, Lester glared at Demas. ”That’s an even bigger problem!”
As they continued to watch, Demas grinned.
“Look! What about the golf clubs in his closet. Jimmy hasn’t played golf for ages. Do you think we could use his interest in golf to distract him? Would it do the job?”
“Demas, that’s an idea. You are learning. If we handle things right, it might just work.”
They quickly formed a plan, and didn’t waste any time putting it into action.
Lester leaned in and discussed his strategy, “Jimmy has a friend at church, Bill. The talk of the folks at church is his six-figure monthly income. Bill’s glass fortress of investments could crash along with the stock market if he isn’t careful. It’s obvious that Jimmy looks up to Bill, follows him around, and hangs on his every word. I think Jimmy is jealous of Bill’s life and beautiful wife.”
Lester cackled and rubbed his hands together. “That’s our way in.”
One Sunday Bill invited Jimmy to play a round of golf on Saturday. Jimmy jumped at the chance.
“Maybe some of his wealth will rub off on me,” he chuckled.
When Jimmy got home at 4 p.m. the day was gone. Wow! Bill didn’t spare any expense when it comes to his custom-made clubs. I enjoyed this so much! Maybe Bill will invite me to golf again. Bill did, and graciously paid for the games.
They played golf every Saturday. Jimmy had a good eye, and a natural swing. It wasn’t long before he became real competition for Bill.
“Bill, I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, and playing golf together.”
Bill slapped Jimmy on the back, “It’s mutual, pal. You are good competition.”
The two men had bonded.
Lester smiled. “This is working better than I thought!”
Jimmy shared with Bill the guilt he felt when he missed the men’s prayer breakfast.
“Hey, everyone needs time to relax and unwind.”
Sally, his wife, asked him, “Jimmy, what happened to the pancake breakfasts you use to fix for the family?”
Jimmy’s face fell, and he had no answer.
It wasn’t just time away from family and other commitments, but golf consumed him. Jimmy broke down and bought a custom-made set of clubs.
One Saturday as Jimmy drove home from the golf course he decided it was time to talk to Sally.
His face turned red as he approached Sally, “Honey, I am so embarrassed and don’t know how to say this, but I need your prayers. I just realized that my prayer life and Bible study time are practically nil. The deep love I had for the Word of God just isn’t there anymore. How in the world did this happen?”
Sally smiled, “Honey, I love you. You can depend on my prayers!”
Then came Sunday. Communion was served. Jimmy broke down and wept as he prayed aloud, “Oh Lord, please forgive me. I truly love you and am so sorry I’ve been ignoring you.”
“I give you every area of my life. I give you my friends, my family, my resources, my recreation – including golf. I give it all to you. Give me a fresh start, and show me how to make my priorities YOUR PRIORITIES.”
Demas and Lester hung their heads and watched. They did not expect this turn of events any more than Jimmy did. But the presence of God was so real they realized their defeat.
“We made one big mistake, Demas,” moaned Lester, “we forget about Sally. We never checked to see if she was a woman of prayer.”
Prayer works. Jimmy surrendered all, and was used mightily by the Lord.
