Then he continued, “Experience is emphatic because it makes you join the journey. I have read, ‘The name of the Lord is a strong tower the righteous run to it and are safe’ (Proverbs 18:10) but never felt it then. I dare not say I am righteous but definitely the name of my Lord is a strong tower and there is no iota of doubt in that. Asaph, a composer and musician says, ‘That they may know that You, whose name alone is the Lord, are the Most High over all the earth’ (Psalm 83:18)
In a nutshell, my family and I wanted to commit suicide. We had nothing left with which we could pull on. On that dreadful night, a bottle of poison was waiting to be consumed in the creepy hours of midnight. Suddenly a woman wearing a white saree (outfit worn by women in South India) stepped into our house. She introduced herself as an evangelist. She told, “The Holy Spirit prompted me to visit your house.” We were dumb-founded.
Although we had nothing to offer, she offered us her soul stirring testimony –the salvation experience. Along with the members of her family who were once non-believers, they got saved and became servants of God. She detailed as to how she received the anointing of the Holy Spirit and as to how the gifts of the Holy Spirit operated through her.
Although we kept listening with rapt attention nothing seemed to deter our decision. With words seasoned with grace she comforted and left our house. We were rather hardened by bitterness that our determination was strong too. Yet, we were thankful for her consideration to step into our poverty-stricken home. This happened about six in the evening. We thought of consuming poison at eleven or half past eleven.
It took seconds for Eve to fall into the snare set by satan. Satan continues to use the three tricks i.e. the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life (1 John 2:26). Satan prompts us to think that we are master of the precious life which God has granted us. No doubt he is the father of lies. He throws lies in such a sugar-coated manner that we confuse it with truth. Finally we even begin to doubt if God failed us. When in our eyes we thought that we had fallen, when the flesh stirred that we had authority over our lives, we were actually unaware that my entire family had been caught in the trap set by satan.
Time ticked as if telling, ‘You have no hope to hold on’. Those were solid moments of strange silence. Poison was poured in four glasses and kept ready. We heard a cab halt in front of our house with a screeching sound. The woman in the white saree who came earlier rushed inside. She told, “Please do come for an all night prayer to be held in our church tonight. God asked me to invite you. The cab is waiting for us outside.”
Arrows of death were aimed at us. Fiery darts of the evil one focused us. We sang Psalm 91. Lord Jesus Christ is our Shield and Buckler. We were inside the mighty fortress – the house of God - in this church. The snare set by satan snapped. A new hope blossomed within us. That midnight prayer continued till the break of a new day. With tears trickling we surrendered our hearts as a family to serve Lord Jesus Christ. His Light shone on our countenance. We promised to live for Him. The angel who strikes may pass over but the blood of the Lamb of God who takes the sins of this world is sprinkled on our door post. We are inside the mighty fortress as we continue to serve Him.
