Looking up and seeing him walking up the driveway after so many years felt bigger than life itself. His face was half filled with eager anticipation of the moment, the other half with paralyzing fear. Maybe he won’t be accepted. Maybe it’s been far too long. Will she scream in agony for him to go away, or lovingly embrace him in her arms? How could he have stayed away like that and without even so much as a phone call of preparation, just show up? After all those years.
In a glimpse that seemed to make time stand still, there he was…or was he? Surely, too much time wavering back and forth on that creaking porch swing had made her delirious. Their eyes met and reality could not be denied. His face weary from the journey, looked hard, but in his eyes she could still see the heart of compassion she once knew. Not a word needed to be spoken, all that should be said was uttered without a syllable. How can one person’s eyes hold so much within.
The years apart have been brutal, cold and bitter. A separation of distance could have been tolerable, but a separation of the heart had produced barrenness for them both. Like a tree without leaves, and earth that does not bring forth seeds, life had been brown and lifeless. With one look he knew he had made the right decision. He knew she had been counting the hundreds of thousands of seconds that had painted her brown hair white.
Slowly she stood to her feet. Smiling, she stretched out her arms so far she thought they would break. With a sigh, they breathed like they had never tasted air before. According to the calendar it was mid September, but for them, spring was finally here. Inhaling deeply, their nostrils were delighted with the aroma of hope and new beginnings. It was the renewed expectation that comes when spring arrives.
The gift of spring was a reminder of God’s unfailing love. Once again they would enjoy the smell of freshly mowed grass, and the sound of blue jays singing their praises. They would take long walks in the park being captivated by the various shades of pink, blue, and lavender flower buds sprouting to life. They would witness the gracefulness of a butterfly, forgetting that just a few days ago he was nothing more than a struggling caterpillar escaping its cocoon. The past did not matter now, only that God’s mercy had shined on them again.
