I remember a friend at work coming up to me and saying that it must be hard to deal with the loss while a holiday, Easter, was upon us. Actually, this was something I did not need to think about. It really was a “good” time for this to happen, because at Easter we celebrate that the tomb is empty and that those that believe in Jesus have not died, but have everlasting life. So, while I mourn my father’s death, I rejoice in knowing he is with Our Father and all my relatives who have gone before.
I can remember this was my first year of giving something up for Lent. I had given up chocolate. It seemed that I was being tempted that entire week as neighbors all showed up with chocolate cakes or cookies around the time of the funeral. I can remember a friend of the family saying that God would not care if I had the chocolate, since I was going through such a big loss. I remember being true to my commitment and not eating one piece of chocolate. Easter was coming. God made a sacrifice for me and I was going to keep my sacrifice to Him no matter what had happened in my life.
While this was a dark period of my life, it was followed by the joy of spring and the promise of God’s eternal love for us through the cross.
