By simple force of nature, there should be supreme consequences for disobedience while living the spiritual life, ultimately, if not immediately. As a child, a complaint to my mother was that so-and-so was doing it, why couldn’t I? Her answer? I’m not so-and-so’s mother, I’m yours; and I said No. As I grew into womanhood, I realized that just because so-and-so is doing it doesn’t mean you should, too. By the same token, I believe God doesn’t let us get away with disobedience to His Word just because others do it and seemingly get away with it. Obedience has gotten a negative connotation - in the strictest sense of the word, it means: Behavior intended to please. Whether anyone is looking or not, as Christians, we should always behave in a manner that is pleasing to God – the first act of obedience even when the rules aren’t succinct and clear.
