I remember when the title phrase “When Men Were Men” began being quoted by certain men who sensitively observed the cultural decline of the 1970’s. Sensing abatement in the value of our masculinity some of the more enlightened suspected that a sneaky kind of evil had crept into society. Males suddenly needed to re-define their gender. It was confusing to the men of our day, due I believe to our bonded familiarity with the iconic role model “Men” of our time. Vince Lombardi, Audie Murphy, John Wayne, Albert Einstein, Billy Graham notwithstanding the ultimate “Man”, Jesus Christ! Forty years ago macho was an assumed trait of these and most other men. Men were men, period. They were macho without having to be defined so by the icons of pop culture

Through the years, inching its way into our society, the male bashing started. Slowly at first, Mr. Macho was culturally propagandized to females in visions of the insensitive brutish cave man beating his woman with a club and dragging her by her hair to his rocky dwelling. Women’s liberation staked its claim. Many males asked liberation from what? The definitive answer went almost entirely unrealized by men and women alike until God revealed to some insightful Christians that society was being liberated from His guidance; from the way in which HE had made the genders to relate harmoniously. 1 Timothy 2:12-15 ESV For Adam was formed first, then Eve; and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Unfortunately the few that understand are not in control of the voices that misinform the majority of world. The satanic media enhances the man bashing message by producing sit-coms, movies, commercials and the like that consistently portray men as comedic weak ineffectual illiterate boobs.

From Bollywood to Hollywood man bashing is the thing to do. It’s become the accepted society norm. If bashing were portrayed only for entertainment purposes, it may be barely tolerated. However, the powerful effect of the media offerings go way beyond entertainment and permeate society as a sponge tossed into an ocean. The brainwash is effective enough that the modern male has accepted his role as the weak wimpy fool, and the modern female has bought into this erroneous portrayal with distain and disgust toward men as a whole.

Because the man is not seen as nor allowed to assume his God appointed leadership role, sacred institutions such as the traditional family, marriage and raising children are devastatingly affected. Most men do not have a clue what is happening. Consequently, men are reacting angrily in rebellion or willingly abdicating their rightful place as a leader. Moreover, the result is an entire generation sold out to the disorderly media point of view, hence the type of hostile crime ridden weak confused society we experience today rolling into the pit of hell in an avalanche of lies. 2 Timothy 3:1-5New International Version (NIV)3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Are all our woes due to the Men not being Men as they were in former days? Hardly, the decline of manhood is just one major aspect of the greater profusion and build up of sin over six-thousand years. Sadly though, too many mature Christian men and women have also allowed the tidal wave of man bashing to overtake them.

Women can greatly counter the tide by honoring their husbands, as it is commanded of them in the Word. However, for the world, it may be too late to reverse the tsunami. The world is likely to go on languishing in sin. Men and Women of God who desire change know they do not wrestle against flesh and blood. The battle is won using the spiritual weapons at our disposal. We who know better do not have to wait for the return of Jesus for things to be re-set in proper order. We can be Men who are Men, right now!
