I am Jonah, and I chose to obey
After I was punished for turning from God’s way.
He sent me to Ninevah, to our enemies grand
Who are known for their cruelty throughout the land.
They don’t deserve God’s mercy and grace.
Why couldn’t He send me to a different place?
If only they had NOT listened to me
I wouldn’t be sitting here so unhappily!
I am the older brother that you know
From a story told by the Master long ago.
My younger brother was loose and wild.
He’s always been a rebellious child.
He left, blew his money and sullied our good name.
Whenever I think of him, I am filled with shame.
My father I have always obeyed.
From his will I have never strayed.
My brother returned, and they made such a fuss.
But I really don’t care that he came back to us.
I am an honored Pharisee -
A staunch pillar of society.
I know the Law inside and out.
There’s no question I am devout.
I fast and tithe on all I’ve got.
The will of God I’ve always sought.
I’m so much better than these sinners around me.
But the concept of grace continues to confound me.
“If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:3 NIV)
