Penniless

Tears welling up in Rachel’s eyes for the third time that afternoon, she glanced across the room at Andrew, wondering if he shared at all in her frustration and anxiety. Marriage was supposed to be a partnership, right? She focused again on the paper in front of her, and started the tedious task of calculating exactly where they were at with their household expenses. With Andrew’s job coming to an abrupt and unexpected halt a month earlier, she was certain they would never move beyond the present situation they found themselves in.

“Do you care at all about this mess we are in? Why do you suppose God is allowing us to go through these tough times? Have we not always been wise stewards of the resources He has provided for us? Why are we having all this trouble making ends meet?” Rachel bombarded Andrew with endless questions, seeking answers he seemingly could not provide.

“Rachel, please calm down…where is your faith? God has brought us to this, and He will see us through this too.” Andrew spoke with a reassurance he did not entirely feel, but knew he could not allow his precious wife to gain access to an even deeper stress level. He watched her gripping a pencil in one hand, and a calculator in the other. Exasperation mingled with fear of the unknown were clearly etched across her face. The earlier threat of tears spilling over became a reality, and now a steady stream poured down her cheeks.

Andrew wrapped comforting arms around Rachel, holding her tight. She reluctantly leaned in at first, while he softly reminded her that God was in control and cares deeply for even the sparrows, and so how much more He deeply cares for them.

“God will provide, Rach. He always has and always will…He does not want us to worry about tomorrow, but rather that we will trust Him one day at a time. He will never leave us or forsake us.” Andrew felt Rachel relaxing with each gentle word spoken.
….

Within the week that followed, Rachel could hear a nearly audible voice saying, “O ye of little faith…” and shuddered at how easily she had doubted the amazing power of the Lord. In fact, she felt more than a little ashamed. Prayers were answered.

Andrew had wondered if he should actually attend the men’s breakfast event at church, simply because the fuel tank was nearly empty and every drop should be saved. However, he had stepped out in faith and on his way home noticed the fuel guage indicated a full tank. Later that day, a friend from church insisted on giving him a deposit as a retainer for a construction project later in the year. The following day, friends invited them out for lunch and told them it had been laid upon their hearts to pay for their meal. Then someone mysteriously provided a few bags of groceries, and sponsored Rachel so she could still attend the ladies retreat. As a grand finale to this myriad of miracles, a savings bond through Rachel’s previous workplace arrived in the mail to access a direct deposit, and Andrew signed on a big job which was to begin within a week or two.

The realization of how God can move powerfully in the hearts and lives of people overwhelmed them and allowed their faith to be strengthened anew. Another valuable lesson in life, but best of all, they learned that even when they thought they were penniless, they were rich beyond words…rich in the trustworthy promises of God.

Great story - I thought it might need a better title however, just my opinion.
