While we did have our share of good food, and there was an air of excitement, it was definitely different. We weren’t there to root for our favorite team. We were there to encourage each other as sons, fathers, husbands, and brothers in the Lord.
The stage, sound system, and lighting were impressive. The layout rivaled some rock concerts I’d seen in the past. It was a nice, professional touch.
Each of the speakers during the weekend was wonderful. Some of the stories were heartbreaking, and some were very funny. It was reassuring to know that they have gone through the same kinds of struggles that we have. I really appreciated their willingness to share the lessons they learned.
In between each of the speakers, we had a lot of opportunities to sing. The band led us in a variety of hymns and praise songs. While I appreciate praise songs, I love to sing hymns. I’m so glad we were able to do both. From time to time during our singing, I heard some voices around us that didn’t quite match up with the melody. Some of the voices were a bit more colorful than others. But, there was no mistaking the vigor in the voices in the crowd. While it was tempting to be distracted by the voices that didn’t quite fit in, I had to remind myself of two things. The first was that I am, by no means, a perfect singer. The second, and most important, was why we sang: to bring praise to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As my wife reminded me, the Bible doesn’t say to sing a beautiful song to the Lord, it says “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!” (Psalm 98:4a)
