Will our government continue to spend money that we don’t have, knowing full well that it can’t continue unabated for long? Do we really want to leave our grandchildren mired in debt, a debt that will destroy their future? Do we want to become even more dependent and accountable to foreign governments holding this mountain of debt? Will we repeat the same mistakes over and over?
These questions, and many more, must be answered by our elected leaders and we, the people of the United States, have a major responsibility for telling them what we expect them to do. After all, the results of their decisions will directly impact each of our lives. And the impact will be dramatic; it could be catastrophic. If the country financially implodes, life as we know it will change for the worse and the American experiment will come to an end. The most powerful, God fearing, and richest nation in history will be relegated to ashes, never to return.
The problems of America have been building for multiple generations. Easy money, the demise of the gold standard, and an attitude of moral relativism have largely led to this predicament. As a nation, we have lost our dedication to hard work and individualism, substituting for it a collective thought pattern which uses group think and political correctness in place of the truth.
Not all are happy with our current posture. A substantial number of us still practice the “old school” of thrift, trust, truth and a real belief in God Almighty as the One of primary importance. But many others have resorted to lip service, opting instead for the new religion of worshipping money and accepting easy answers to difficult problems.
History is full of examples which can be used to show where we are headed if we don’t change course. A couple of them come readily to mind.
The Roman Empire was the major power of its time, yet it quickly fell when it became soft, decadent and lazy. And, of course, Germany, after being totally faulted for World War I, was relegated to shame and, coupled with the Great Depression, fell into shambles. A proud people, the Germans saw in Adolph Hitler the answer to their prayers. They voluntarily granted him the powers with which he ultimately subjugated them to being working pawns for carrying out his evil plans.
No one likes to dwell on doom and gloom and, thankfully, there are signs that people are waking up. Many of our states, a major component of our federal system, have decided to control their own destiny and, in so doing, are setting an example for others to follow. Citizens are starting to get involved and actively follow the issues. And they are voicing their opinions loudly in greater numbers than ever before. And finally, the evangelical Christian movement is growing in stature and strength, ultimately returning to a philosophy of absolute answers to important moral questions while rightfully putting Jesus Christ on the Throne as our Lord and Master.
Now some say that everything will be okay, that all we have to do is pray to God and He will solve our problems. In its broadest sense this is true. But since we have free will, God expects us to use our brains which He so graciously gave us, to get involved, roll up our sleeves and do the hard lifting. We must pray for guidance, which He will provide, and turn that guidance into action. If we do this, He will not let us fail.
Americans, remember that the early Christians were persecuted for their beliefs. Today, we might suffer the same fate. But if we believe that Jesus, through His grace, offers us eternal life, we can withstand anything this world can throw at us. We should all be comforted by that.
Come on, America, let’s get to work. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of history. We are better than that. Only a strong, fiscally sound and God loving America can provide the leadership that is needed today. Get involved, don’t sit on the sidelines any longer. Let’s roll.
