Topic: Singing (10/31/05)

TITLE: Wonderful Grace!
By Sylvia Stong

Oh, how I remember singing from that old “Praise and Worship” hymnal back in that little Nazarene Church in Lander Wyoming! I was about five or six at the time and just learning to read so of course I didn’t quite know all the words, but I loudly came rejoicing “Bringing in The Cheese” and I enthusiastically “Dusted around the Throne” as I marched on to Zion, and I reverently, and loudly, sang “just As I Am without One Flea” during the very solemn altar call.

I think my sense of humor was budding at that time as well as my love of singing, but I still remember the joy and inhibition of singing. Singing… loudly… with the gusto, and the innocence of youth and with the joy of the LORD in my heart.

As I grew older and after many admonishments from my mother, I finally learned to read the words and I finally toned down my voice and I learned that “I should Come Rejoicing Bringing In The Sheaves” and Thus Surround The Throne as I was “Marching to Zion” and come “just as I am” without one Plea… quietly…as I was preparing for altar call. But you know I really wonder if I have ever sung with so much praise and honest worship in my heart as I did when I didn’t quite know the words but I sang purely from my heart.

I believe with all my heart as I look back now, that my GOD was sitting up there in heaven smiling down on this chubby little girl who was singing the wrong words, but with joy and innocent worship, for you see I believe that my GOD does have a sense of humor, it is a gift HE gave me and I also believe that HE wants me to come before HIM in innocent, joyful worship forgetting about all the things that come into my life to staunch that flow between HIM and the slightly humorous, little girl in me.

“Wonderful Grace of Jesus” page 333 in that old “Praise and Worship” hymnal has become my favorite hymn throughout the years, and I think that says it all. HE gives me grace when I sing the wrong words, HE gives me grace when I fail, he gives me grace through humor, but most of all HE gives me grace when I get the words right but forget that joyous innocence of worshipping before HIM, and belting out the “Wonderful Grace of JESUS” just to HIM!

This was a delightfully honest piece of writing. I could picture a little girl singing at the top of her lungs, singing proudly and loudly to JESUS! Such a refreshing aspect to singing hymms as a child, I loved this article, thank you.

I would not use large caps though...it comes across as too brash. You really added character and humor, I love that.
