Countless diamonds shimmer across the dark, hidden lake. Who would have thought such a watery habitat could have made its bed here-nested high up in the bosom of mountains crowned with colossal, moss-covered boulders and caped in the dark hues of the evergreen. Here, in this secret spot, the waters wrap themselves in a constant chill, though the sun longs to penetrate the frosty waves and meet the inhabitants below.
The location of this lake is home to another treasure: a trail that winds its way through the kingdom of green to the top of the highest point between the vast Rocky Mountains, and the famous European Alps. From atop such a peak it is easy to see across the land and into 3 other states! An eagle’s eye covets a sight like this. The rock that forms this ancient peak is infused with shards of shiny micah. Just as the stars of the evening glitter and shine with the moon, so these stars below twinkle in communication with the sun.
Still further on past the shining waters and geological skyscraper, comes an entire change of land. The mountains shrink to hills and mounds, the lakes diminish to frog ponds, and the tall graceful trees give way to endless waves of emerald grass trimmed with wildflower jewels. Here is the domain of a once overthrown king. The revered bison nobly roams this vast grassland without danger of being erased from the earth. Thick woolen coats protect the the smooth fragile hide beneath; darkened piles of curls wreath the massive head. Wide, liquid-brown eyes diligently observe the other subjects of this domain: the swift prong-horn, the flighty deer, the wild burros, and the compulsive prairie dogs.
Finally, because pure wilderness rarely goes untouched, a majestic lodge fits itself into the scenery. Clothed with great shaved pine and resting a couple stories high, this elegant piece by no means intrudes on the extraordinary land around it. To stay here is quite a treat, but its worth the cost to rise each day in such a place of wonder, beauty, and peace.
