Carefully Planned or a Surprise?
What in the world is a potluck?
Something yummy or something yuck?
The word was in use long ago,
In England and the US we know.
Irish women each some food brought.
Then they put it in one pot.
Sometimes we have a true pot luck.
With whatever is brought, you’re stuck.
The menu may be all desert.
Planning ahead this will avert.
The hostess may prepare the meat,
Something to drink and bread to eat.
Guests can choose salad or dessert.
Then no one’s feelings will be hurt.
Family and friends are the guests.
With fellowship they will be blessed.
Church potlucks just may be the best.
Cooking talent is well expressed.
Family reunions I recall.
Each brought what she did best of all.
Edna beef and noodles did make.
Gladys made a burnt sugar cake.
Esther’s Mary Anne cookies a treat.
It was a feast when we would meet.
No worries about cholesterol when.
Sunrise to sunset they worked then.
The way you choose to organize,
Carefully planned or a surprise.
It’s fellowship with one another
That’s a blessing like no other.
