It’s little wonder that the kitchen is a hot bed for the most enjoyable of our experiences, i.e. good food, while it is also the equal to the restroom for the most fertile place in the house for bacterial growth.
Practically everyone knows about bacterial growth and the fact that we have bacteria that is beneficial and that which is destructive. All Chemists, Physicians, Nurses, and Laboratory Technicians
have a special appreciation for this fact since they use microscopes and see those tiny things not visible to the unaided natural eye.
One of the bacteria’s we use is beneficial but can become spoiled and thereby cause us to be sick. I am speaking of the yeast that we use in the making of bread.
Yeast has a long history. According to Wikipedia there has been evidence excavated proving the use of yeast for the making of bread in Egypt as far back as 4000 years ago. (*1)
There is also another application for the activity of yeast; that which puffs up and also corrupts. We read about that in the 16th Chapter of Matthew, verses 6 - 12.
Jesus and the people of His time surely knew about yeast and its properties. Jesus warned His Disciples to “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisee’s and of the Sadducees.” Leaven is an equivalent word for that which makes bread rise.
Jesus’ Disciples did not quickly connect the spiritual advice about which Jesus was really speaking and they thought Jesus was speaking of physical leaven and physical bread. Jesus told them that He was speaking about the “doctrines” of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Why is Doctrine that we learn so important to our lives? Why is all that we learn so important to us?
Most all of life is cyclic and its examples recur in rapid succession. The ingredients which we put into the cooking of food, which either enhances the taste or makes it useless and unpalatable can be equated with our lives and the Doctrines, morals and values we learn as we live life. Whatever goes into our understanding about what is right and wrong, will have everlasting effect on everything we do or leave off doing.
Scripture contends that our words are also like the effect of yeast in our families. Good words are life producing and bad ones are destructive and disabling.
Generally speaking it is not earth shaking to live by the values of the society in which we live unless those values violate God’s ideas of right and wrong. If that is the case then we are harming ourselves by living our lives based on what is acceptable to our peers, because all of God’s Laws are for our benefit.
I like analogies and this is a great one to hold in our minds: in our homes we want good, clean and pleasantly seasoned food, nutritious food that settles well and provides us with good health. Should we not also take great care that those ingredients we “mix” into our families by way of morals, and values, and respect for and love for God, is pure and spiritually health producing?
Here is what Jesus says about it: “Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4: 4
“In the Kitchen” is really our life experience. We are always creating something, either beneficial or not beneficial. The ingredients we use makes all the difference in the product produced.
