"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:6, 7 NIV).

I live in a small country of less than three million people. Each year at this time, there is the budget debate. During the debate, the finance minister details how the government plans to fund the country's expenses for the upcoming fiscal year. In this year's debate the minister outlined new tax initiatives that were met with an outcry from many sectors of the society. Discussions on the negative effects of these strategies bring a sense of frustration and hopelessness.

Radio and television programs hold round table debates on "the gravity of the economic problems facing the country," and the discussions continue. The views expressed are varied, and people have different perspectives on these pressing matters. Sadly, these discussions leave me anxious and wondering, "How will I manage in these times?"

In the face of everything, I realize that I need to safeguard my heart. So I have begun to monitor the number of discussions that I watch and listen to. I now realize that the things that get most of my attention influence my thinking and actions. That is why the Scripture encourages, "guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life" (Proverbs 4:23 NLT). Similarly, we are warned that whatever we continue to ruminate on becomes our reality, "for as he thinks in his heart so is he" (Proverbs 3:7 NKJ).

As I reflected to these Scriptures, I experienced a deep sense that I need to trust in God, no matter what. Instead of focusing on the myriad shades of perspectives on the situations in my country, I am learning to find stability. This balance comes through meditating on God's Word. The Word of God has a great deal to say to us about dealing with situations like these. At this time, I feel God is gently saying to me, "be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10 NIV).

Consider the situation that Jesus' disciples experienced. Jesus, their friend, was leaving them. What was more, he told them he had to die on the Cross. But Jesus comforted them with the words, "Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid" (John 14:27 NIV). The same comfort is available to us today.

Your situation might be different from the one I am facing in my country. But whatever the issues that are impacting your life, receive Jesus' words today, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives" (John 14:27 NIV). You can find tranquillity amidst the challenges you face at this time. Make a decision to allow God's peace, which he makes available to you, saturate your very being.
