Where did man come from?
What is man’s duty here?
What is man’s destiny?
These three questions have concerned philosophers for centuries. It is the believer in Christ that finds a satisfactory answer to any of these questions. The first question concerns the origin of man. The speculations of the evolutionary hypothesis belittle the nature of man by suggesting that he gradually emerged from a lower form of life. But the true believer in God recognizes that in the beginning man was brought into existence by a divine act of special creation, which he was made in the image of God. It is this belief that clothes man with infinite worth and places a high value on every individual.
The second important question concerns why man is here. Each person has a task to perform. No one is here by chance. All have a purpose to fulfill in life. Christ has given each a work to do, but few follow the path that has been assigned to them. Man’s duty is to glorify his Maker and be a blessing to his fellow men. Each has a place in the eternal plan of heaven. Each is to work in co-operation with Christ for the salvation of souls.
The third question concerns man ultimate destiny. To the unbeliever death is the end of existence. He does not see beyond the grave. Christian faith looks beyond the present into eternity. Life is full of meaning to the individual who believes that Christ died and rose again and ascended to heaven and is soon to return for His people.
How truly thankful we should be for the faith that gives meaning to our existence and helps us find answers to these three great questions.
