It was the fragrance that brought the memories like a flood. Mary recalled only a short time ago that her brother Lazarus had been ill. She had begged Jesus to come see Lazarus knowing that even the hint of his shadow or the fragrance that emanated from Jesus’ body would be enough to keep him from dying.

After his death, Mary prepared Lazarus’s body for burial using perfume of the same fragrance, and now she was walking to the tomb where her friend, her savior, her God lay decaying. The fragrance of the perfume in the jar she was carrying reminded her of another strong scent.

She remembered the woman who had walked into the place where the disciples were. She broke the jar of expensive perfume and anointed the body of Jesus for burial. The fragrance permeated the room so much that Mary could barely still smell it on her clothing. The disciples were angry at the woman, but Jesus was quick to rebuke. “The poor will always be among you…” he said, as one of the disciples yelled at her to sell the perfume and give the money to the poor.

Maybe it was the fragrance of the ointment and perfume from her jar, but, as she approached the tomb, she noticed that the stone had been rolled away. Terrified she asked the gardener where others had taken the body. Even the gardener was interested in what it was in the jar with such a powerful aroma.

She thought the fragrance had made her mind crazy when she walked into the tomb. There sat a man in robes. The man in robes explained that Jesus was no longer there, that he had risen from the dead, and that his disciples were to meet him in Galilee.

As she placed the full jar on the shelf in her store room, she rejoiced that the fragrance from the perfume in the jar would never again need to be used. Jesus was alive and so was she. Jesus came to bring life, and to destroy the fragrance of death. Halleluiah, she thought, Halleluiah!

This was tight. It was powerful and aromatic to be a short story. Would have liked to have heard more--but very nice. Well done. God bless ya, littlelight

Very interesting, like being a reporter and witness close to Mary. Nice narration and tight piece. Thank you.

Very interesting rendition of the story of Mary and the jar of ointment. It left a beautiful fragrance on my mind.

You have a message of hope for this present day when you write "...the fragrance from the perfume in the jar would never again need to be used..." Lovely!
