Life on Planet Earth has not been dull. From the dawn of time it has plunged to unfathomable lows and soared to new heights, taking twists and bends that have altered its course irreparably, making it unrecognisable to its previous inhabitants.
It all started at the dawn of time. As perfect man took the fruit from his beautiful wife and put it to his lips the planet careered off course. Designed for a life in the company of their loving Creator, the flawless prototypes of man and woman transmuted into marred shadows of their former glory, fearful, ashamed and accusing . The ultimate plan changed to a rescue plan. Never has there been so radical a change of direction on Earth. Yet following that, in the context of a 'planet in process' there have been other events which, like the glancing blow of a billiard ball on its fellow, sent the world in a different direction:
The catastrophic upheaval of the Flood changed our geology, turned bones to stone, wiped every living thing off the face of the earth (save those in the Ark) and animals and man ate one another.
The dispersion of the people of Babel radically altered history as people, standing in shocked amazement listening to their neighbours babbling unintelligibly, abandoned their plan to reach the heavens, and scattered. The community of man, became communities of tribes and nations estranged from one another, suspicious and territorial.
Then, in that glorious moment when God revealed His audacious Master Plan the history of mankind tilted upwards as the Cross bore the bleeding Lamb. Then, as Jesus rose and passed His authority to men they "turned the whole world upside down" with the sacrificial love of a God who was the Way, the Truth and the Life.
Yet, while the scarlet thread of the people of God continued, flavouring society and spreading circles of light, the world was still dealt glancing blows that changed its direction or altered its character.
The "age of enlightenment" brought a spiritual darkness as wise men denied God and became fools with preposterous theories of the spontaneous, increasing complexity of organisms.
Two bloody world wars birthed an organisation that is empowered to interfere in the affairs of every nation, giving legitimacy to a world authority and paving the way for a New World Order.
And so we can look through history and see the world zig-zagging on its course as events knock it this way and that: The industrial revolution, creating a demand for fuel for its new machines and empowering the Arab nations, the professors of Islam, with untold riches; the attack on the World Trade Centre causing a world of suspicion and tight security such as had never been seen before.
Then came the Information Revolution ---- and out of that, a revolution in social media and networking. When Facebook was launched just seven years ago and Twitter followed in its wake, it seemed like a fad for teenagers. Yet it changed the direction of Planet Earth once more as it paved the way for global virtual communities. From photographers to football fans, gourmets to grannies, fiends to philanthropists, all can now have their say across the world. It has changed the way we advertise, receive news, vent our views, display our talents and lament our losses.
Politically, an American president was elected thanks, in large part, to his social media savvy and it has mobilised the masses in unprecedented revolt against oppression.
Wars and rumours of wars are broadcast, planned and executed through the social networking mechanism as massive support for all manner of causes is generated from a computer or a mobile phone.
And in Kingdom terms excitement is in the air! Suddenly we can see how the gospel can be preached to every nation and, yet more exciting, we can see the reality of what the Word proclaims: When our Saviour, the Lord Jesus returns every eye will see Him!
So when false messiahs appear on Facebook, earthquakes are reported at lightning speed around the world through Twitter, and blogs proclaim all manner of apostasy, look up! Your Saviour is just around the corner!
